Ted Cruz jokes Katy Perry is out Trudeau’s league

On Capitol Hill, Sen. Ted Cruz mocked the romance between Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau—suggesting the pop star is “out of [his] league”—as Perry described Trudeau as the “love of her life” at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Sen. Ted Cruz didn’t wait for the Tribeca spotlight to land—he brought it to Capitol Hill.
On Tuesday, June 16, Cruz told TMZ on Capitol Hill that he was thinking about an old saying: “outkicking your coverage.” In his telling, Justin Trudeau had managed to do just that.
Cruz also framed his remark alongside a personal note. He said he’s in the same “camp” as his wife of 25 years, Heidi Cruz.
When asked what the romance between Trudeau and Perry may mean for U.S.-Canada relations, Cruz delivered the line that landed with a wink: “Well, I will say, objectively, it does prove U.S. Canada relations.”
Perry, 41, has already made her feelings public. At the Tribeca Film Festival, during a panel following a screening of her new “Lifetimes” concert movie, she said she feels “very in love” with Trudeau.
“At the end of 91 shows, I feel like a more grounded person in so many aspects of my life. I am very in love,” Perry told moderator Tomás Mier. “I met the love of my life, so I felt very anchored by that.”
She continued with a vivid comparison: “I’m a little bit like a rainbow kite: I fly super-high… and sometimes I need to be anchored. So to have that anchor finally makes me feel really whole now.”
The relationship has been unfolding in public, but not all of it has been neat timing. Perry and Trudeau first sparked dating rumors last July, about a month after Perry split with actor Orlando Bloom. The two confirmed their relationship in December. sharing a collection of photos and videos from Perry’s time in Tokyo during her “Lifetimes Tour. ” including snaps from her travels with Trudeau. the former leader of Canada’s Liberal Party.
The personal histories behind the headlines are just as visible. Perry and Bloom ended their engagement in June 2025 after nine years together, and they share a daughter, Daisy, 5.
Trudeau’s own chapter ended after years that once defined his public life. Trudeau and Sophie Grégoire announced their separation in August 2023 after an 18-year marriage, and they share three children. Trudeau served as Canada’s prime minister for a decade, starting in 2015, before resigning in January amid political pressure.
Even without changing any facts about the two relationships. the mood is plain when you line up the moments: Perry describing Trudeau as the “anchor” to her high-flying life. while Cruz treats the pairing as a punchline—measuring it in “outkicking your coverage” terms. One is framed as grounding; the other, as a mismatch that’s somehow still working.
As of now, Perry’s comments at Tribeca have put the romance front and center in a way that invites both celebration and jokes—right up to the Capitol, where Cruz turned personal chemistry into a quip and tied it, with one sentence, back to the idea of U.S.-Canada relations.

Ted Cruz really said that? Wild.
I mean politics aside, Katy Perry saying Trudeau is the love of her life feels like a headline bait thing. Cruz’s joke is kinda dumb but also like, who cares? U.S./Canada relations don’t depend on pop stars lol.
Wait so is Cruz saying Trudeau is outkicking his coverage like… he’s basically dating way above his skill level? Because I swear I heard something about “coverage” in sports and now it’s about relationships? Also the article says “objective” like that makes it scientific? not sure.
This is why nobody trusts Congress, they’re busy roasting celebrities on Capitol Hill instead of literally anything. I don’t even know why Perry’s a part of U.S.-Canada relations, seems like another distraction. Cruz should worry about his own “camp” like the border or taxes or whatever. But yeah the joke landed, I guess, even though it’s all nonsense.
