A courtroom sentence landed with force on Monday for Marius Borg Høiby, the son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Mari. After a six-week trial, the 29-year-old was convicted and sentenced by Judge Jon Sverdrup Efjestad for assaulting his former girlfriend, Nora Haukland.

Høiby received four years in prison. The court also ordered compensation to Haukland and three other women, whose identities remain anonymous. Two separate rape charges ended in acquittal.

The case has been shadowed by years of allegations that grew in scope. Høiby was reportedly charged with 32 counts in August 2025. including rape. sexual abuse. secretly filming people without their consent. sexually offensive conduct without consent. and more. That list later expanded to 38 counts. The conviction and sentencing now finalize the assault case following the trial.

Alongside the prison term, Høiby was placed under a two-year restraining order protecting one of the victims.

Norway’s royal family has not addressed the sentencing directly. Crown Prince Haakon—Høiby’s stepdad—issued a statement in January. saying: “Our thoughts are with everyone who is affected by this case. It has an impact on the individuals, their families and all those who care about them. We understand that this is a difficult time for many of you, and we sympathise. At the same time. it is reassuring to know that we live in a state governed by the rule of law. I am confident that those responsible for overseeing the proceedings will ensure that the trial is conducted in as orderly. proper. and just a manner as possible.”.

The sequence matters: charges were expanded, acquittals were issued on two rape counts, and yet the court still imposed a prison sentence for assault, with compensation ordered and a restraining order in place.

  1. 4 years seems light for assault honestly. Royal families always get like the “best lawyer” treatment.

  2. Wait so he got acquitted on the rape charges but still got prison for assault? That part is confusing like how is that all connected. Also why are they naming one victim but not the others?

  3. The rule of law line is cute but it just means it took forever. Like if they had evidence they’d’ve just convicted everything, right? And isn’t he the crown princess son? So basically privileged guy still breaks laws.

  4. I saw something about secretly filming and I’m like… that alone should be harsher. Four years is either too much or not enough depending on what he actually did, but the article is kinda all over. Also the stepdad statement sounds very PR-ish, not gonna lie.
