Taylor Swift closes “Toy Story 5” premiere with piano song

At the June 9 “Toy Story 5” Hollywood premiere in Los Angeles, Taylor Swift completed a Pixar moment that began as a surprise arrival—ending with an on-stage performance of her “Toy Story 5” finale song “I Knew It, I Knew You,” and a live duet with Randy Newma
When Taylor Swift finally stepped into the spotlight at the Dolby Theatre on June 9 for the “Toy Story 5” Hollywood premiere, it didn’t feel like a typical celebrity beat. It felt like a curtain call built into the movie itself.
Her entrance—described as a “back-door arrival” even as Tom Hanks was pulled off the Dolby Theatre red carpet for cast photos—set the tone. Hanks. the voice of legendary animated cowboy Woody. had been making his way past reporters when he joked. “I go where I’m told. ” before heading over for the photo session with Swift and the cast.
Hanks later shared a more personal detail from the event: Swift asked him to sign her original “Toy Story” VHS copy. The exchange wasn’t just a friendly gesture. It became one of those small moments that fans latch onto—because it linked Swift’s fame directly to the franchise’s history.
On the carpet. Swift also presented Joan Cusack. who voices cowgirl Jessie and returns at the center of “Toy Story 5. ” with a loaf of her famous Swift sourdough bread. With the premiere crowd watching the music superstar move through the spotlight. Hanks’ description of that kind of in-person attention carried a hint of amazement.
The night’s biggest emotional payoff arrived after the film ended. As the crowd was still applauding, the Dolby Theatre curtain rose to reveal Swift in a yellow gown with “Toy Story” colors, standing at a grand piano.
At the center of the finale was Swift’s original song for the movie, “I Knew It, I Knew You,” written with Jack Antonoff. Swift then delivered a piano-acoustic version of the track—described as a mini-Swiftie concert for an audience still stunned by what they’d just seen.
Standing at the middle of the stage, Swift paused from performing long enough to tell the room what the moment meant to her. “It means the world to me to be a small part of the universe of these films,” she said. “I’m so lucky to be a part of this.”
She then asked anyone in the audience who worked on the “masterpiece” to take a bow, and she singled out praise for Cusack. Jessie takes extra prominence in “Toy Story 5,” and Swift said the character became the inspiration behind her title song.
Swift also pointed to the person she credits for shaping the franchise’s musical identity: Randy Newman. “I’m very lucky I got to write for this film. ” Swift said. giving Newman credit as the songwriter at the heart of the “Toy Story” universe. “He is the architect to the ‘Toy Story’ universe,” she said. “He is the king of us feeling the absolute most in our hearts and making us laugh. He’s one of our friends.”.
Newman rolled onto the stage from his slowly moving piano as the crowd erupted into applause. And when he began playing his classic “You’ve Got a Friend in Me. ” the room shifted again—grown adults in the audience breaking into applause and even tears. The live duet between Swift and Newman became the kind of Pixar moment people talk about the next day.
Swift finished the song by pointing toward Newman, then held her microphone in the air triumphantly as the curtain dropped. “Mr. Randy Newman,” she said.
There was a reason so many people sounded stunned by the end: the performance wasn’t just a promotional cameo. It folded the franchise’s emotional language—Newman’s beloved melody—together with Swift’s new “Toy Story 5” music finale, all staged in front of the people who brought the film to life.
And in the quiet after, one exhausted superfan next to me summed up the feeling in two words: “That was so cool.”

Wait so she just showed up and played a song? That’s honestly kinda iconic.
Back-door arrival sounds like she snuck in while they were kicking people out of the red carpet? And Tom Hanks being pulled off for cast pics is wild. Also “Swift sourdough bread”?? never heard of that but it seems like a publicity stunt lol.
I thought this was called Toy Story 5 like… already out?? Or is it another Taylor Swift movie thing? Randy Newma?? maybe I’m mixing names up but why would she duet with a guy named like that instead of like Tim Allen or something. Idk it just feels like too much celebrity stuffing into Pixar.
The VHS signing part got me, like why was that the big thing for me? I know the article says it linked her to the franchise history but it also just feels like she’s always got to add a collectible moment. Plus the yellow gown and piano… that sounds like a stage show, not a movie premiere. I’m sure it was cute though. I just wish they’d stop pulling focus from the actual film.
