Taylor Frankie Paul’s rehab stay didn’t arrive as a headline in the way most public disclosures do. It arrived in short. careful videos on an Instagram story on Sunday. July 5—an explanation she said she wanted to be first to share. even as she acknowledged that she might not be believed or fully understood.
Paul, 32, said she chose to go to a facility earlier this year for her mental health. She emphasized that the decision wasn’t only about substance abuse. and described her goal as a “reset” and a chance to “decompress” away from the noise. The timing matters because this is the first time she has addressed the situation in the middle of ongoing legal battles involving her ex-husband Tate Paul and ex-boyfriend Dakota Mortensen.
“I willingly did that. That was my choice,” Paul said in the videos. “To judge and speak of a timeline or why someone went, I think, is cruel.” She added that she was upset the decision was “weaponized” against her for seeking help.
While in treatment, Paul said she began taking “a really good antidepressant” that has been working for her, adding that she would share more details in the future. She also said it worries her to seek help because of what she said happened afterward.
The rehab disclosure landed alongside another set of courtroom developments. On June 30. Tate Paul filed for a restraining order against Taylor Frankie Paul and asked the court to amend custody of their two children. alleging she was not honest with him about her mental health. A Utah judge denied the request the next day. but Paul’s broader court fight remains active—particularly her ongoing dispute with Mortensen over custody of their toddler son.
As the legal pressure continued, Paul told viewers on Instagram that the situation had reached a high level. “There’s a very serious situation going on at maximum level,” she said. She argued she had tried to keep the details of her mental health private. saying she felt entitled to privacy while also stating she was willing to be open with people who needed to know. Paul said she believed confidentiality in private rooms should remain private. and argued that not everyone should have access to it.
That same night. she posted again on her main Instagram feed. seemingly tied to her current legal issues and to Mortensen’s calls to police connected to custody exchanges. which have been reported as having occurred. In her post. Paul said she intends to start “a nation wide change to help others; women. men. teens. kids etc with signs of abuse because that’s whats happening.”.
Her comments also echo a prior conflict. In February, Paul was arrested after an alleged domestic violence incident involving Mortensen. The Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office ultimately decided not to pursue a case against her.
Paul has said the system’s role can be distorted by abusers. “It’s not the system they are just the tool for the abusers,” she wrote. “We just need to bring more awareness so they know this is textbook behavior for the next person that will be going through this. [Domestic violence] is the top called incident in the state of Utah and not everyone understands it’s not just physical and that’s so important to know.” She added that speaking from her own experience. when she admitted wrongdoing. she said she was still learning and was “not understanding yet” and was “not the instigator.”.
The legal fight has also reached her career. Her arrest resurfaced details from another domestic violence incident in 2023, for which she had been arrested at the time. Footage from that period was included in part in a video published by TMZ in March. showing Mortensen filming while Paul hits. kicks. and throws furniture at him. A child was also heard crying in the background. In light of the video, Paul’s season of “The Bachelorette” was scrapped days before the premiere.

In June, a judge granted Paul unsupervised overnight visits every other weekend and one midday weekday visit not overnight. Before that, she had been limited to supervised visitation for up to eight hours each week.
The court has also continued mutual restraint terms in place. A judge continued the terms of Paul and Mortensen’s mutual three-year restraining orders. which bar them from “making disparaging remarks of one another” and require them to stay 100 feet apart from one another. Those restraining orders were granted in April. when 3rd District Court Commissioner Russell Minas determined the exes have a “dysfunctional” and “very toxic relationship.”.
Minas said there was a pattern to how close they stayed to each other—one he believed turned violent. “There seems to be a continuing attraction that they have for each other,” Minas said at the time. “Whether it’s physical. whether it’s the thrill of the two of them being a part of making themselves celebrities. there seems to be this attraction.” He added: “The problem is that the two of them can’t be together in the same place at the same time for very long before it starts to turn violent. … I am very concerned.”.
The rehab stay Paul described is now part of a wider. unresolved picture—one shaped by disputed custody. restraining orders. and accusations traded through legal filings and police calls. Her decision to seek mental-health help may be simple on its face. but in her telling. the public—and the courts—have treated it as something else.
