Switzerland strikes late to crush Bosnia 4-1

Switzerland 4-1 – In a dramatic finish at SoFi Stadium, Switzerland turned a 1-0 lead into a 4-1 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Thursday, June 18 in Inglewood, California—setting up a crucial final group match against Canada on June 24.
For more than an hour. it stayed tight—Bosnia and Herzegovina sat in and absorbed pressure from Switzerland at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. California. Then the game snapped open in the final stretch. as substitutions paid off. a red card forced Bosnia to play with 10 men. and Switzerland scored in rapid succession to win 4-1 on Thursday. June 18.
Switzerland had its first breakthrough through Johan Manzambi. who scored for the second time in the match after coming on as a substitute. Ruben Vargas added a goal in the 84th minute, and Granit Xhaka converted a stoppage-time penalty to seal the victory. Ermin Mahmić pulled one back for Bosnia in stoppage time, but by then the match was already decided.
The result pushes Switzerland closer to advancing from Group B. Switzerland collected three points and moved to four points total with a +3 goal differential. Bosnia and Herzegovina still has one point, now with a -3 goal differential. The standings could shift after Canada and Qatar play later in the day.
In the biggest hinge of the night. Bosnia’s defense looked organized through the second-half hydration break—yet Murat Yakin’s late decisions swung the game. Bosnia’s tight shape lasted until Tarik Muharemović was shown a red card for a clear foul just outside the penalty box. forcing Bosnia to finish the final 10+ minutes a man down.
From there, Switzerland’s attackers kept finding the seams. In the 85th minute. Ruben Vargas scored for the second time after a play involving the earlier scorers—Vargas got into the box and found Manzambi positioned right in front of the net. Moments earlier. Switzerland appeared to extend its lead after Breel Embolo delivered a pass to Vargas. who fired to the bottom right corner. Bosnia goalkeeper Nikola Vasil couldn’t get a hand on it.
Even the late penalty felt like the final layer. With the clock winding down. Djibril Sow was fouled inside the box by Amar Memic. and the referee awarded a penalty kick. Granit Xhaka took it for Switzerland. and although Vasil guessed correctly. the ball went underneath him as Switzerland scored its fourth goal and the final whistle followed.
There was also the human sting of what Bosnia missed—Ermin Mahmić scored in stoppage time, but the timing only offered damage control rather than momentum into the next matches.
The sequence leading to Switzerland’s first goal began after Manzambi entered the match. The ball bounced around in the box before it found Manzambi’s right foot. His strike found the back of the net past Vasil, putting Switzerland ahead. The goal came three minutes after Manzambi entered.
Switzerland’s late goals didn’t come from nowhere; the match had already carried a sense of inevitability after the first half stayed scoreless. Through the first 45 minutes, neither side scored. Switzerland had control early, putting stress on Bosnia and Herzegovina out of the gate. During the first 23 minutes, Switzerland controlled possession and owned the ball for roughly 69% of the first half. Yet Bosnia held firm, limiting Switzerland to one shot on goal and turning aside early threats.
Bosnia’s first real warning of the second half came through Amar Dedic, who delivered a fast shot toward the goal that Switzerland goalkeeper Gregor Kobel had to swat away. Switzerland cleared the ball just before the hydration break.
Before the match opened its scoring, the game’s physicality and discipline were already shaping the rhythm. Nico Elved became the first Switzerland carded player after running through Sead Kolašinac. and Bosnia earned a free kick opportunity. Earlier. Edin Džeko—Bosnia’s 40-year-old striker. who is listed as the nation’s all-time leader in goals (73) and caps (149)—received a yellow card for a foul. Tarik Muharemović also nearly kicked the ball into his own net in the first half, instead conceding a corner.
For Switzerland. the match began under a familiar World Cup uncertainty: it included a first-half moment when Dan Ndoye performed a bicycle kick that sailed over the net. missing what could have become a standout goal. Džeko. meanwhile. was a late omission from the starting 11 against Canada due to a shoulder injury. but he started against Switzerland on Thursday.
Beyond the tournament stakes, the night also included a brief disruption before kickoff. Both teams had sprinklers turn on during warmups, sending water over players and forcing them to run around to avoid getting wet less than 30 minutes before kick off.
The group picture now tightens around what comes next. On June 24. Switzerland will face Canada. with the Swiss aiming to reach the knockout stage of a major tournament (World Cup and European Championships) for a seventh consecutive time. Bosnia and Herzegovina will face Qatar on June 24, chasing a first World Cup knockout round qualification.
Group B continues to refuse certainty this week: each of the opening 2026 World Cup matches in Group B ended in draws, so none of the four teams can qualify for the knockout rounds during the matches played on Thursday, June 18.
If Switzerland maintains its position, the payoff is clear. A win over Canada on June 24 would further strengthen its driver-seat standing. For Bosnia. the path is narrower—and its 2026 run depends on turning the stoppage-time goal by Ermin Mahmić from a moment into a response when it meets Qatar on June 24.

So the red card is what decided it? Sounds like refs just ruin games. Switzerland was barely doing anything till late.
I didn’t even know Bosnia played Switzerland over here at SoFi. 4-1 feels huge but it says it was tight for over an hour… so where did the goals even come from?? Also Canada is next, right? hope Switzerland doesn’t choke.
Refs don’t “ruin” it, the team still has to deal with it. But if Bosnia got that red just outside the box then that’s basically a free goal like every time. So yeah Switzerland benefiting late doesn’t surprise me.
Switzerland crushed them after subs… or like after the hydration break?? I saw “stoppage-time penalty” and thought it was already 4-0 or something. Then it says Mahmic scored in stoppage time too? I’m confused how it’s 4-1 if there was a late goal. Anyway Canada match is gonna be scary.
