Sunday in the Park producers quash Ariana recast rumors

Speculation spread online that Ariana Grande might be recast in the upcoming London production of “Sunday in the Park with George.” But the show’s social accounts posted her performing and doubled down on her role, even as ticket-sale delays had fueled earlier

Ariana Grande’s name has been tied to “Sunday in the Park with George” for months — and for some fans. that link suddenly felt shaky. Social media speculation kicked off that Grande may be getting recast in the upcoming London production. with the rumor gaining traction after delays around when tickets were set to go on sale.

Grande was first announced to star in the production in January, alongside “Wicked” co-star Jonathan Bailey. Ticket timing later became the spark for fresh chatter about whether she was leaving, but the musical’s own social media accounts have moved to shut the story down.

On Wednesday (June 17). the show posted a photo of Ariana on stage during a stop of her “Eternal Sunshine Tour.” The caption pulled in a line from composer Stephen Sondheim. who wrote the music and lyrics for the musical. “Only way to make a work of art.” they wrote. then added: “Our Dot is putting it together on The Eternal Sunshine Tour. That’s what counts.”.

That “Dot” reference matters: in the musical, Dot is one of the central characters, and tying Grande directly to the role pushes back against the recast rumors without offering a formal statement.

The London production of “Sunday in the Park with George,” starring Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey, is scheduled to launch in 2027 at the Barbican Centre. Tickets are slated to go on sale this fall.

The musical itself centers on painter Georges Seurat as he meticulously works on his masterpiece. “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. ” while navigating his complicated relationship with his lover Dot. In the second act. the story shifts to his great-grandson. George. tracing how art. love. and creative legacy echo across generations — with Dot now aged to be elderly.

While Grande’s theater future is being watched closely, her calendar is packed. Coming up later this year, she’s set to release her new album “petal,” and she’s also starring in the new movie “Focker-In-Law!”

  1. I don’t get why people think she’s getting recast when the show literally posted her on stage. But ticket delays always cause drama, so I can see why it started. Also 2027 is forever away.

  2. “Dot” matters… but didn’t they also call her Dot on some other thing? I swear I saw a clip where she wasn’t even playing Dot. And the Stephen Sondheim quote is cute but it’s still not a direct “she’s staying” statement. Plus London shows love to switch stuff last minute.

  3. Ticket-sale delays = recast rumors… that’s literally how it always goes, right? Like producers get scared and swap people. I mean she’s also doing that “Focker-In-Law” movie or whatever so maybe they’re trying to make it work. 2027 at Barbican is so far out though, maybe the rumor is just bored people on TikTok.
