Shrek 5 trailer debuts, fans clash over new look

DreamWorks has released the first trailer for Shrek 5, returning Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz after 17 years. The footage leans into chaos, with a “caked up” Gingerbread Man and a new city called Further Further Away—but it has also sparked backla

The first Shrek 5 trailer opens like a bedtime story—right up until Donkey bursts in and announces it’s makeover time.

After multiple delays. DreamWorks is back with a chaotic promise: Shrek. Donkey and Fiona are returning with Mike Myers. Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz all reprising their roles. The film marks the franchise’s return after 17 years since Shrek Forever After in 2010. and it’s set to hit theaters on June 30. 2027.

The trailer wastes no time leaning into that familiar, messy energy. It includes a storybook recap of the original. then pivots into something more absurd—an on-screen Gingerbread Man with two gumdrops strapped to his butt. declaring he’s “caked up like a friggin’ bakery. ” followed by enthusiastic twerking.

Then the gang heads somewhere new. Shrek and Fiona are joined by their three grown-up kids as they travel to a city called Further Further Away, described in the trailer as sketchier than Far, Far Away ever was.

One sequence lingers in the mind for the wrong reason: a melting, grimy snowman lurking in a back alley, asking, “Wanna date a snowman?”—a clear wink at Frozen’s Olaf.

While the trailer is packed with jokes and visual surprises, it also contains a silence that’s already fueling speculation. Zendaya voices Felicia, Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, and her involvement in Shrek 5 has been confirmed. But she’s completely absent from the trailer footage. Shrek is shown in a jail cell with Fiona and his two sons. Fergus and Farkle—yet Felicia does not appear anywhere. Whether that means she’s been kidnapped. written out of the teaser. or simply not featured yet is anyone’s guess.

Even without Felicia on screen, the bigger fight seems to be visual. Many fans have taken issue with the updated animation style. saying Shrek and Donkey look noticeably more detailed and lifelike than in previous films. The backlash is blunt: on social media. at least one comment points to lighting and skin textures. arguing that a movie from 15-plus years ago now looks better than what’s coming in 2027.

Comments on Universal’s Instagram have echoed the same frustration. Some users wrote. “we want the old Shrek back. ” while others urged the studio to “do what they did with Sonic. ” referencing how Paramount redesigned Sonic the Hedgehog after fans revolted over the original movie look. It’s still too early to say whether Universal would face pressure to make changes. but the comparison is now part of the conversation.

For now, the trailer has done exactly what DreamWorks probably wanted: it’s turned anticipation into strong feelings—laughs, questions, and arguments over how Shrek should look while the release date inches closer.

  1. I saw the part about Zendaya and now I’m confused why she’s not in the trailer? Like did they just announce her for clout? Also twerking Gingerbread Man is such a weird choice lol.

  2. People clashing over the new look like they didn’t watch Shrek get weird in the first place. The “Further Further Away” name sounds fake though, like they just stretched it for marketing. And “Wanna date a snowman?” isn’t that just ripping off Frozen? Idk man.

  3. Mike Myers is back so I’m supposed to be happy but that trailer felt off? Shrek in jail already?? That doesn’t even sound like the 17 year later timeline they always talk about. Also if Felicia is Zendaya then where is she like for real, are they hiding her for the sequel within the sequel. This is gonna be chaos either way.
