Saturday night looked like it might slip away from the New York Liberty after Indiana carried a 57-54 lead into the fourth quarter. Then the last 10 minutes flipped. New York outscored the Indiana Fever 29-18 in regulation, turning a close game into a statement comeback.

Breanna Stewart was at the center of it. She finished with 30 points. eight rebounds. four steals. and two assists. shooting 6-of-15 from the field and 18-of-21 from the free-throw line. The rest of the Liberty attack arrived in waves: Satou Sabally scored 13 points with five rebounds. Pauline Astier added 12 points and three rebounds. while Jonquel Jones and Marine Johannes contributed eight points each.

After the final horn, Stewart addressed what this league asks of its players—especially when a win doesn’t come dressed up. She described the difficulty of playing through growing pains, and the way defense can change everything when offense struggles.

“This is a really tough league to play in, so if we can separate ourselves defensively, it’ll bring us more offensively. We need to have that sense of urgency from the jump. We’re happy we got the win, but growing pains, it’s needs to be like that all the time,” Stewart said.

Then, pressed on what happens when the shot isn’t falling, she made her point with no room for polish.

“Listen to me. We didn’t shoot the ball well? Like, f*** it. Honestly, we want to win games, whether they’re pretty or they’re ugly, and that’s going to be the separator down the line.”

The win matters beyond the scoreboard. New York is now 7-4 on the season and sits second in the Eastern Conference standings. The Liberty are above the Fever and the Toronto Tempo, while trailing the Atlanta Dream.

Next up, New York will be tested on the road when they take on the Connecticut Sun. That matchup is scheduled for June 8 at 7 p.m. ET, setting the stage for whether the Liberty’s fourth-quarter surge—and Stewart’s “winning ugly” mentality—can carry into their next challenge.
