Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi are back in the search for a new football project, with West Ham now firmly on their radar.

Exploratory talks have taken place with the Championship club as Staveley and Ghodoussi consider a potential deal. Staveley’s investment firm, PCP Capital Partners, is understood to be looking at opportunities at several clubs, and that process has included Tottenham.

For Staveley, the attraction is clear and personal. Speaking to Spear’s Magazine this week, she said her and Ghodoussi’s interest lies in “building a business where we can take a brand that isn’t doing so well, a club that isn’t performing well, get it on the right road, and bring that forward.”

She added: “There are very few clubs (where that can) work. If you want to tick every box, there’s actually very few clubs that allow that.”

That pitch will be tested by the fact West Ham are coming off a difficult Premier League exit. The club were relegated from the Premier League on the final day of the season, leaving them with a reset to manage in the Championship.

Staveley and Ghodoussi previously demonstrated that kind of turnaround ambition at Newcastle. They led the takeover of the club in 2021. assembling a consortium that included the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia and the Reuben brothers. Within 18 months. Newcastle qualified for the Champions League. and their work laid the foundations for last year’s Carabao Cup win — Newcastle’s first domestic trophy in 70 years.

The picture around any West Ham bid has another complication: the Reuben brothers, who remain co-owners at Newcastle, are not part of the group looking to buy West Ham.

West Ham’s current ownership is structured with David Sullivan leading the group. Sullivan holds 38.8 per cent, Daniel Kretinsky has 27 per cent, and other investors include the Gold Family Trust on 25.1 per cent.

Sullivan stepped down as joint-chairman and director earlier this month, ahead of the publication of allegations concerning his personal life.

Taken together, the timing and the shifting leadership at West Ham are striking. While Staveley talks about building toward recovery after underperformance, the club’s own ownership environment has already been in motion, with Sullivan moving aside as attention turned to personal allegations.

For now. this remains exploratory — a set of discussions that could either fade away or become the foundation for something bigger. But with Staveley and Ghodoussi’s track record at Newcastle and West Ham’s need to rebuild after relegation. the talks carry real consequence for the Championship club’s next chapter.

  1. Did they say they’re doing exploratory talks? That sounds like nothing is even happening yet. Also West Ham got relegated because of politics or something, right? Not sure why everyone’s already moving on.

  2. Amanda Staveley already “turned around” Newcastle so obviously she can just do the same with West Ham, like it’s a cheat code. But wasn’t Newcastle only good because they had that Saudi money? I mean I’m not mad, just saying. Relegation usually takes years to fix though, so this feels a little fast.

  3. I saw this and thought it was Tottenham at first because the headline is like “taking a club” and then it mentions Tottenham in the same breath? West Ham fans are gonna be like “here we go” again. Reuben brothers… are they the same Reubens from something else? Anyway if they promise they’ll take a club that isn’t performing and put it on the right road then cool, but I’ll believe it when they’re actually winning. Also Championship is not some little side quest, it’s brutal.
