Stars fill Chicago as Obama Center debuts June 18

When the doors opened in Chicago on Thursday, June 18, it didn’t feel like a typical ceremonial debut. Hollywood legends and entertainment heavyweights arrived early for the grand opening of the Barack Obama Presidential Center—bringing a level of celebrity visibility the Obamas have rarely seen paired with a presidential site.
Among those who made the early arrival were Oprah Winfrey. Billie Jean King. George Lucas. Steven Spielberg. Tom Hanks. Conan O’Brien. Gabrielle Union. Quinta Brunson. LL Cool J. Mark Hamill. and Jon Batiste. Late-night titans Stephen Colbert and David Letterman were also on hand. wearing tan suits described as a comedic nod to Obama’s infamous press conference attire.
The guest list for the ceremony’s stage was just as crowded. Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Christina Aguilera, Common, Eddie Vedder, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Marsai Martin, Marc Anthony, Tems, The Roots, and U2’s Bono and The Edge were set to appear.
The lineup also stretched beyond entertainment. Former presidents Joe Biden, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton were listed among the other notable attendees.
President Donald Trump, whose relationship with Obama has been described as fractious in recent years, was not invited.
The center’s opening is part of a grand opening weekend of festivities over the Juneteenth weekend. The campus sits on Chicago’s South Side and spans 19 acres. with a Chicago Public Library branch. a playground. a sledding hill. a café and restaurant. an athletic center. community spaces. and a ticketed museum.
The museum—and the broader operation of the site—marks a departure from the standard presidential library model. The Barack Obama Presidential Center is a privately operated. non-federally run organization. not part of the National Archives and Records Administration’s presidential library system. The museum itself is also being run privately.
All of it adds up to a debut that is both public and curated: a campus built for the neighborhood, opened with spectacle, and governed outside the traditional federal framework that many U.S. presidential libraries follow.

So Trump wasn’t invited… shocker. Bet that’s gonna be all anybody talks about on Juneteenth.
I saw Oprah and Spielberg and thought it was like a film festival opening or something. Isn’t this supposed to be a presidential museum? Like what’s the difference if it’s privately run?
The tan suits part is funny I guess, but wasn’t Obama like, already done with that press conference thing? Also “ticketed museum” sounds weird for a presidential center, like are they charging extra to learn history or what.
Not invited Trump = liberals cheering, conservatives mad, same old. But I’m confused why it’s a big celebrity parade when the campus is 19 acres with a library and stuff… like do they actually do community stuff or just sell tickets and invite celebrities. Also I heard from a cousin it was government run so idk.
