The timing carries extra weight for long-time viewers. September 8 marks 60 years to the day since the initial U.S. broadcast of the first Original Series episode, “The Man Trap,” which aired on September 8, 1966. The series was technically first broadcast on September 6, 1966, when Canadian broadcaster CTV jumped the gun by two days. The date has since been designated Star Trek Day, and Paramount often organizes promotional campaigns around its observance.
For fans who’ve been weathering a rough stretch. the release hits like a little proof that the franchise still knows what matters. Starfleet Academy was canceled after airing its first season. and a proposed follow-up to Strange New Worlds remains in limbo amid a corporate shake-up at parent company Paramount.
Even with what’s stalled, Star Trek: The Original Series has always had a way of coming back. The show was pitched by creator Gene Roddenberry as “Wagon Train to the stars. ” cast Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Christopher Pike for the 23rd-century USS Enterprise. and shot the pilot “The Cage” with Hunter—only for the network to reject it. Hunter was then replaced with William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk. Shatner’s chemistry with co-stars Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley helped drive the show forward. and it was given the green light.
Star Trek went on to build a devoted fan base. but it struggled in the ratings for all three seasons before being canceled in 1969. It lived on through syndicated reruns. eventually returned as both an animated series and a feature film franchise. and then spawned a galaxy of spin-offs starting with The Next Generation in 1987.
Now, on September 8, that original starting point will finally arrive in remastered form for the people who never stopped collecting, watching, and—most of all—waiting.
