Balogun-USA appeal chaos could leave red-card ban

Balogun ban – Folarin Balogun’s availability for the USA’s World Cup last-16 against Belgium is now in doubt after Belgium won the right to appeal FIFA’s decision overturning his red-card ban. Information is due by 5am PST, with a ruling possible before the 5pm PST kickoff

Monday night in Seattle is no longer just a World Cup match on the calendar—it’s a legal and emotional cliff edge for the USA.

Folarin Balogun, USA’s tournament top scorer with three goals, could still be banned from the showdown against Belgium after FIFA’s appeal process was triggered following a red card that has since turned into an all-out fight over how the rules are applied.

Belgium’s federation has been granted the right to appeal the FIFA ruling that allowed Balogun’s ban to be overturned. At this stage, it is possible—though not guaranteed—that a decision reimposing the ban could be made before Monday night’s game in Seattle.

The timing is tight. Both the United States and Belgium have been asked to provide information over the appeal by 5am PST on Monday morning. The match kicks off at 5pm PST. A member of FIFA’s appeals committee has been selected to hear the case.

Balogun’s trouble began in the USA’s 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the last 32. when he was shown a straight red card. At the time. the decision drew criticism. including after the referee reviewed the incident on video replay and judged it serious foul play. It also meant Balogun was set to miss the next USA match.

The central incident came in the second half, after Balogun had scored earlier. During a tangle of legs with Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemovic. Balogun’s leg raked down Muharemovic’s calf while Muharemovic was struggling to balance and trying to jostle for possession. Referee review on video led to the red.

But after FIFA suspended Balogun’s ban on Sunday, the story took a political turn.

FIFA announced that Balogun’s ban was wiped out for a one-year probationary period—cleared unless he commits another offence of similar nature and gravity. The reversal sparked immediate celebration from the USA. USA manager Mauricio Pochettino said on Sunday: “We celebrate that decision.” He added: “This is good for football. to celebrate [that] in the next game if an unfair thing happens you can reverse the decision.”.

Behind the scenes, Donald Trump’s intervention entered the picture. Sources confirmed to the Daily Mail that Trump called FIFA president Gianni Infantino “to better understand the reason why a red card was given and why there was a suspension. ” and that the US government provided additional evidence used in the appeal process.

Trump later thanked FIFA on Truth Social for “reversing a great injustice,” posting: “Thank you to Fifa for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice! President DONALD J. TRUMP.” Infantino had awarded Trump the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize last year.

Belgium’s response has been furious and public. Belgian soccer bosses issued an angry statement saying they were “astonished” by what they view as an unprecedented move. Belgium coach Rudi Garcia delivered his own cutting remark. saying: “I didn’t know that at the World Cup. July 5th is now April 1st – April Fool’s Day. We’re defending football and its ethics.”.

UEFA then joined the fight, issuing a blistering statement of disbelief. UEFA said: “When the certainty of rules is no longer guaranteed by its guardians. the integrity of the game is at stake and the credibility of a competition is undermined.” UEFA also said: “Football is the most loved sport in the world because it is a beautiful game and is trusted because it is played everywhere with the same laws.” It added: “We express our disbelief at such an unprecedented. incomprehensible and unjustifiable decision.”.

That wider dispute has only sharpened the human timing pressure on the USA. If Belgium’s appeal succeeds, Balogun could find his status reversed again just hours before kickoff — turning the country’s World Cup plans on Monday night into a scramble.

There is also a further irony in how the eligibility issue sits in the middle of the controversy: Balogun qualifies to play for the United States due to “birthright citizenship. ” a rule Trump was wanted to overturn. His heavily pregnant mother was stopped from boarding a flight out of the United States when she was heavily pregnant. and Balogun was then born in Brooklyn. New York.

So while the stadium will be preparing for the match against Belgium in Seattle at 5pm PST. the real question is whether the red-card story ends with Balogun cleared to play—or whether the ban returns through the appeal that Belgium has now pushed forward. Either way, the decision is set to land after 5am PST information is submitted and before the kickoff window closes.

  1. I don’t get it, Belgium appealed and now it’s like a whole legal show? If he got the red card then he should just serve it, simple.

  2. Wait, the red card got overturned then Belgium appealed it back?? Sounds like rules don’t matter anymore and it’s just whoever yells louder. Also 5am PST to 5pm PST is like… super weird scheduling, that’s probably why people are mad.

  3. This is why soccer is exhausting. They’re saying “serious foul play” but it was a leg rake in a tangle, like… every tackle has some mess. If they re-ban him before Seattle then the coach is cooked. I swear the video review flips it either way, depending on who’s in charge.
