When play stopped in the second quarter of the 2026 season opener between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the Montreal Alouettes, Hamilton had a surprise ready for Brandon Banks.
The Tiger-Cats announced on Thursday night that Banks—the CFL’s outstanding player in 2019—will be inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame this fall.
The timing wasn’t accidental. Banks had signed a one-day contract with Hamilton on Wednesday to retire a Ticat, and he was in attendance for Thursday’s game. The Hall of Fame itself is located within Hamilton Stadium, tying the recognition back to the home he built most of his legacy in.
Banks, 38, will be inducted on Sept. 17. The rest of the 2026 class will be named later.
At 5-foot-7 and 155 pounds, Banks earned the nickname Speedy B honestly. He played eight of his nine Hall of Fame seasons in Canada with Hamilton—2013-2019 and 2021—before finishing his career with the Toronto Argonauts in 2022.
His place in CFL history is already carved into the record books. Banks holds the CFL record for missed field-goal return touchdowns, with five, and ranks third all-time with 13 kick-return TDs. In 2019. he won the CFL’s outstanding player award after leading the league in receptions (112). receiving yards (1. 550) and receiving touchdowns (13)—all career highs.
On special teams, Banks’ influence in Hamilton is even deeper. He was the CFL’s top special-teams player in 2015 and holds the Ticats’ all-time records for kickoff return yards (3. 773). punt return yards (3. 049) and missed field-goal return yards (779). He is also second in total touchdowns (62), combined yards (13,686), and punt return touchdowns (seven).
Across the league, Banks was a CFL all-star four times and an East Division selection on six occasions.
The one major milestone he didn’t capture with Hamilton was the Grey Cup. He came close to ending the Ticats’ long title drought—the longest in the CFL—dating back to 1999. In the 2014 Grey Cup, Banks returned a punt 90 yards for a touchdown with 35 seconds remaining to seemingly put Hamilton ahead. The celebration didn’t last. The score was nullified by an illegal block penalty, and the Calgary Stampeders went on to record a 20-16 victory.
Even the game’s MVP was a reminder of how quickly Hamilton’s future was already shifting. Calgary quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell—now Hamilton’s starter—took that honour. Banks appeared in four Grey Cups with Hamilton, all of them losses.
His first Grey Cup finally arrived in 2022, with Toronto. The Argonauts edged the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 24-23 in Regina, giving Banks the championship moment he couldn’t secure in a Hamilton uniform.
The Hall of Fame executive director Eric Noivo praised Banks’ impact in a statement that matched the feel of his career: blazing ability tied to stubborn determination. “His numbers and accolades speak for themselves,” Noivo said. “But it’s Brandon’s lasting impact on the game that has earned him a place in history. His breathtaking speed defined him, but we’ll always be in awe of his passion, determination and drive.”.
Before the CFL, Banks spent time with the NFL’s Washington Commanders from 2010-12 after his college career at Kansas State. He signed with Washington as an undrafted free agent.
Back in Canada, the career totals underline why his Canton-worthy case was never really in doubt. Banks finished with 422 catches for 5,678 yards and 44 TDs in 111 career regular-season contests with Hamilton. He remains the franchise leader in career kick-return yards (3. 773). punt-return yards (3. 049). missed field-goal return yards (779) and missed field-goal return touchdowns (five). He is second in total touchdowns (62). combined yards (13. 686) and punt return touchdowns (seven). and is inside the top eight in receptions (442). receiving yards (5. 678) and receiving touchdowns (44). He also registered three consecutive 1,000-yard campaigns with the Ticats from 2017-19.
In his only season with Toronto, Banks had 37 catches for 522 yards and four TDs.
On Thursday night, Hamilton didn’t just announce a date on the calendar. It brought Banks’ story back to the stadium where his numbers and his reputation both took shape—setting up an old rivalry and a familiar man for a new kind of spotlight on Sept. 17.
