Spurs near Finals, but Murphy III trade talk shifts

Spurs trade – Hours before Game 1 of the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks at home, the San Antonio Spurs have been linked to New Orleans Pelicans forward Trey Murphy III—but the direction of this roster, and the timing of it, may leave little room for major change.
When the San Antonio Spurs walk into Game 1 of the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks on Wednesday at 8:30 pm ET. they’ll do it with momentum that feels earned. not borrowed. The Spurs are at home. and they’re coming off a playoff run that included a seven-game victory over the reigning champion Oklahoma City Thunder.
The buzz around the Finals isn’t only about who’s on the court—it also travels to the Spurs’ offseason options. NBA insider Jake Fischer said the Spurs have had interest in New Orleans Pelicans forward Trey Murphy III. But Fischer’s message came with a hard stop, and it centered on where San Antonio’s roster already is.
“Right now, you can kind of check them off of being that. Clearly, San Antonio has a build that has been humming in the right direction all the way to this NBA Finals,” Fischer said, per Bleacher Report.
That “build” is the part that shapes the real catch in the trade talk. Many pundits are already expecting the Spurs to take care of business against the Knicks in this series. largely because of Victor Wembanyama’s standout play throughout his first career playoff run. And from there. the Spurs’ shooting has carried its own weight—particularly in the way it came alive in their Game 7 win over the Thunder.
Fischer’s point is that a player like Trey Murphy III. with the skillset he brings. may not fit the roster need the Spurs are trying to solve right now. The focus on outside shooting has been tied directly to what San Antonio already has. with Julian Champagnie. Devin Vassell. and others already on the perimeter picture. In other words: if the outside stroke keeps showing up. the Spurs may not have a practical opening to force a new piece into the mix.
The challenge against the Knicks could be exactly where that matters. San Antonio will need its shooters to stay hot from beyond the arc, especially if New York continues the perimeter run that helped them sweep both the Cleveland Cavaliers and Philadelphia 76ers on their way to the Finals.
For all the trade chatter, the immediate spotlight is on Game 1. The Spurs vs Knicks opener is set for Wednesday at 8:30 pm ET, and it will be televised by ABC.

So they won’t trade for him because they already have shooters? Sounds like the Spurs just don’t want to do anything lol.
I’m confused—if the Spurs are “near Finals” why are we even talking about trading? Like don’t they need chemistry not Trey Murphy.
Trey Murphy III doesn’t fit but they’re saying the outside shooting is already covered by Vassell and Champagnie… so basically Wemby just needs more cardio? Also Knicks always shoot better in playoffs from 3 so maybe Spurs panic-trade after Game 1.
Jake Fischer said hard stop but that headline makes it sound like a deal is happening. Also why is it always the Spurs linked to random players like they’re stuck in trade rumors forever. Game 1 on ABC at 8:30 though, I just want to watch, not read about who they might swap in theory.
