Springfield eighth-grader dies after pool emergency trip

A 14-year-old Springfield student, Emari Marshall-Woodard, died after suffering a medical emergency in a swimming pool during a field trip at High Meadow Resort in North Granby, Connecticut. Police say no foul play is suspected as they investigate.

A 14-year-old Springfield eighth-grader was taken from a swimming pool in North Granby, Connecticut, after a medical emergency, then died after being transported to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.

Police say first responders were called to High Meadow Resort around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. The student, identified by Granby police as Emari Marshall-Woodard, was transported to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Marshall-Woodard was an eighth-grader in the Springfield Public Schools district and was among a group of Springfield students visiting the venue.

Granby police are investigating the death. Capt. Kurt LaFlamme said at this point no foul play is suspected, and that investigators believe the circumstances “appears it’s a drowning.”

Granby police said in a Facebook post that fellow students witnessed the incident and were “overcome with emotion.”

Springfield Public Schools said in a statement that “Our hearts are with the student’s family. friends. classmates. school staff. and all those whose lives have been touched by this unimaginable tragedy.” The district said counselors and support staff are being made available to students and staff who may need assistance “in the days and weeks ahead.”.

High Meadow Resort also released a statement. It said that “this afternoon. an eighth-grade boy on a field trip suffered a medical emergency in the pool and was taken by ambulance to the local hospital. ” adding that the resort “learned that he passed away this evening.” The resort said. “All of us at High Meadow are deeply saddened. and are praying for his family. friends. and classmates.”.

Officials did not say which Springfield District school Marshall-Woodard attended, though Western Mass News reported that Springfield’s Kiley Middle School was among the schools visiting High Meadow Resort that day.

  1. This is just heartbreaking. How is a “medical emergency” happening in a pool and nobody says more?

  2. They’re saying it “appears it’s a drowning” but also “no foul play.” So was it like accidental or are they covering something up? Either way that poor kid.

  3. Wait so he got taken out and then still died at the hospital? My cousin had something like this happen after swimming and they said it was like a seizure or something. I don’t know, just sad. Field trips should have better staff ratios.

  4. High Meadow Resort sounds like it should have lifeguards everywhere 24/7… unless it was one of those times where the “pool emergency” is what they call CPR only. Also why can’t they just say what medical emergency it was? It’s always vague at first then later it’s something completely different.
