Olivia Rodrigo’s “less” replays a breakup’s last date

On her new album, Olivia Rodrigo’s “less” turns a strained final attempt to save a romance into one vivid scene—from a recreation of a favorite date to crying “on the curb at LAX.” The singer also explains how the track came together, while fans connect it to

Olivia Rodrigo doesn’t ease into the ending—on her new song “less,” she starts by trying to put love back in the same place it once felt safe.

The 23-year-old singer-songwriter’s track appears on her latest album you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love. and it’s already pulling extra attention for how specifically it revisits the final moments of a relationship. In the song. she recalls the attempt to recreate a couple’s favorite date—only this time. the mood doesn’t return.

“We tried to recreate our favorite date but we didn’t laugh much this time / Our trip to Big Sur only confirmed this isn’t what it should feel like,” Rodrigo sings.

The lyrics move from recollection to something more exposed and raw: the doubt that love is still possible. even when both people can see the truth. She sings. “And I could try convincing you they’re just intrusive thoughts but you’ve seen me truly happy. so you know right now I’m not / If loving me means crying on the curb at LAX well. then I guess I wish. I wish. I wish you loved me less.”.

Rodrigo says “less” also reflects a real creative decision—one shaped by restraint. Speaking on Popcast, she explained, “A song like ‘less’ was added, obviously, later in the album making process, and I think it was us trying to practice a little bit of restraint.”

The song’s emotional storytelling has helped fuel speculation among fans about whether “less” draws from Rodrigo’s own breakup history. Many listeners speculate that, like other tracks on the album, it’s inspired by her real-life split from ex Louis Partridge last year after two years of dating.

For now, the song stands on the details themselves: Big Sur, LAX, and the feeling of trying to force laughter back into a moment that has already changed.

  1. Wait so this is about her breakup or like just a made up song? People keep saying Louis Partridge but I feel like everyone’s guessing. “Crying on the curb at LAX” is kinda heartbreaking though.

  2. I don’t get why it’s a “last date” if it’s literally called less? Like isn’t that about being less in love not saving anything. Also Big Sur sounds like a vacation ad lol. If she really cried at LAX that’s wild, but maybe she means like any airport curb not the actual one??

  3. The part where she “wishes you loved me less” is brutal. I read the headline and assumed it was gonna be like a diss track, not her trying to recreate a date. The whole “restraint” thing makes it sound super calculated too, like she planned the sadness for the album rollout. Honestly though, people act like it’s 100% her breakup with Louis but maybe she just likes those places.
