In a post on X on Thursday, Musk said SpaceX’s AI division is hiring engineers and physicists as the company prepares for what could become the biggest IPO in history. He also told candidates he will personally review all applications that pass what he called “reasonable sanity checks.”
Musk made the process unusually direct for a hiring push that could shape the future of SpaceX’s AI ambitions. “While you don’t need any experience in AI to apply. ” he wrote. adding that applicants must email the company three bullet points demonstrating “evidence of exceptional ability.” He told candidates. “Smart humans figure it out fast. ” and added. “If you’ve made a very complex thing do useful work. that’s a major plus.”.
For applicants, the instructions were as concrete as the stakes. “Please send an email with ~3 bullet points demonstrating evidence of exceptional ability” to ai_eng@spacex.com.
The hiring effort lands in a wider corporate reshaping already underway. Musk merged his rocket company with his AI startup, xAI, in February. Before the merger, xAI had operated as a stand-alone business. SpaceX is now actively hiring world-class engineers and physicists for SpaceXAI, even if candidates “have zero prior experience in AI.”.
This approach mirrors Musk’s earlier attempts to pull top technical talent into his AI projects. In January, while hiring to work on Tesla’s AI chip, Musk asked prospective candidates to email three bullet points on the “toughest technical problems” they’ve solved.
The competition for high-end AI talent remains fierce. On Tuesday. Tesla’s former AI director and OpenAI founding member. Andrej Karpathy. announced he would be moving to Anthropic—an outcome framed as a win for the AI powerhouse. For xAI. which is now part of SpaceX. Musk said in March he would be “going through the company interview history and reaching back out to promising candidates. ” following the departure of several cofounders.
The timing also sits alongside a major capital-market moment for SpaceX. SpaceX filed its S-1 paperwork on Wednesday, with its official IPO slated for June. The company expects to raise between $75 billion and $85 billion, valuing it between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion.
Taken together, the message to candidates is clear: SpaceX isn’t waiting for conventional signaling. It wants fast, concrete evidence of ability—and Musk is putting his name behind the review process as the company edges closer to a potentially historic public debut.
