Sophie Cunningham’s 22-second point steals Fever-Mercury spotlight

Sophie Cunningham’s long, wordless point back at DeWanna Bonner for roughly 22 seconds during the Fever’s 86-77 win over the Mercury turned a heated exchange into a viral moment—while the bigger WNBA week kept circling Caitlin Clark’s own referee controversy.

For roughly 22 seconds in the fourth quarter, the argument stopped being words and became a message.

In the Indiana Fever’s 86-77 win over the Phoenix Mercury on Monday night. Caitlin Clark and DeWanna Bonner got tangled up and exchanged words after referees whistled the play dead. They were separated quickly. and Sophie Cunningham was one of the first Fever players on the floor to get to Clark’s side. Emotions didn’t cool, though—moments later, Bonner and Cunningham became the center of the ongoing trash-talking.

Bonner issued “choice words” to Cunningham and pointed at her. Cunningham held eye contact and wordlessly pointed back, then kept pointing—again and again—until a seemingly amused Fever staff member redirected her toward the bench.

Both players received technical fouls for the exchange, but the technicals didn’t become the headline. The moment did.

Online. it immediately turned into meme-ready shorthand for watching something unfold with the kind of frozen focus usually reserved for real-time games and bad deadlines. One post compared it to “Me watching the server at Chipotle trying to shake that extra chicken off the serving spoon. ” signed “— Mario (@NerfFries) June 25. 2026.” Another simply used a child’s curiosity as a caption. posting “My 2 year old: pic.twitter.com/6YKdK3jdYE” and tagging “— Mina Kimes (@minakimes) June 25. 2026.”.

Cunningham has been quick to lean into that kind of attention when it arrives. She has taken selfies with fans while posing and pointing, and the viral moment carried the same signature energy.

There is history behind why it landed so hard. Cunningham wasn’t Bonner’s teammate in Phoenix, and most of the Mercury roster has since changed. But Cunningham played for the franchise from 2019-2024. and she and Bonner were briefly teammates last season with the Fever before Bonner left for the Mercury after nine games. Cunningham later criticized Bonner’s exit. saying. “It’s OK to be professional about it and. like. send a text to your teammates. ” on her podcast last year.

Monday wasn’t the first time Cunningham found herself inside a Clark-related flare-up, either. In 2025. after Clark received an eye poke from then-Connecticut Sun guard Jacy Sheldon during a game. Cunningham hustled back and effectively headlocked Sheldon on a layup attempt. That sequence led to both players being ejected from the game.

Even away from the court, Cunningham’s momentum is measurable. She has 1.5 million Instagram followers. She co-hosts the “Show Me Something” podcast with Bravo personality West Wilson. She appears as a guest analyst during USA Network WNBA broadcasts. She has endorsement deals with Adidas, Quest Nutrition and SHARx. This spring, she debuted in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.

So when Bonner pointed at her and Cunningham pointed back—kept pointing until a staff member intervened—it didn’t feel like an isolated moment. It felt like the Internet finding its latest focal point in real time, and Cunningham already knowing exactly what to do with it.

  1. So she got a technical for just staring?? That feels like the refs wanted screen time more than anything. Caitlin Clark drama always follows her, it’s like a magnet.

  2. I saw the clip and I thought Cunningham was calling her out like… for clout? But then it says 22 seconds and meme-able, so now I’m confused like is this basketball or just two people trying to win the internet. Also why did Bonner point first, that’s what people keep saying but the article kinda… goes back and forth.

  3. This is why WNBA is getting more attention, the little “pointing” thing is way funnier than all the 3pt highlights. And the refs whistled it dead, then everyone started acting like it was a full fight lol. Bet you the meme comparison to Chipotle is gonna be the only part anyone remembers though, not the actual score 86-77.
