Sharks extend – San Jose has agreed to terms with defenseman Nolan Allan on a two-year contract extension valued at an average of $875,000 per year, keeping the 23-year-old in the organization through the 2027-28 season.

The San Jose Sharks moved quickly to keep Nolan Allan from slipping away. On Tuesday, the club announced it has agreed to terms with the defenseman on a two-year contract extension.

The deal carries an average annual value of $875,000 and runs through the 2027-28 season. Allan, 23, had been set to become a restricted free agent without arbitration rights before San Jose finalized the extension.

The structure of the contract reflects a gradual path into full NHL responsibility. The first season of the agreement is a two-way deal paying him $850. 000 at the NHL level and $300. 000 in the American Hockey League. with a guaranteed minimum salary of $375. 000. In the second year, the contract converts to a one-way arrangement, with a salary of $900,000 regardless of league assignment.

Allan’s rise in the organization has been tightly tied to timing and opportunity. San Jose acquired him from the Chicago Blackhawks on Jan. 8, 2026, in a trade that also included goaltender Laurent Brossoit. The Blackhawks received Ryan Ellis’ contract, Jake Furlong and a draft pick package in return.

After joining the Sharks organization, Allan spent the remainder of the season with the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda. He appeared in 35 games and finished with 14 points, including two goals and 12 assists, while adding 28 penalty minutes. His 14 points ranked fourth among Barracuda defensemen, and his production nearly doubled in points-per-game after arriving in San Jose. Allan also produced a three-game point streak from Jan. 24-31, recording one goal and two assists, and he collected points in five of nine contests between Jan. 24 and Feb. 18. He later appeared in two Calder Cup Playoff games.

That AHL resume didn’t start in San Jose. Before the trade, Allan played for the Rockford IceHogs, giving him 144 career AHL games with 11 goals and 32 assists for 43 points. Across nine postseason appearances in the league, he has contributed four points.

While Allan has continued to develop in the minors. the Sharks have also seen what he can do at the NHL level. His NHL experience came during the 2024-25 season with Chicago. where he appeared in 43 games and amassed eight points—one goal and seven assists—while averaging 15:08 of ice time per game. That campaign also came with a minus-13 rating.

The extension also locks in a player the Blackhawks originally drafted. Allan was selected by Chicago with the 32nd overall pick in the first round of the 2021 NHL Draft. His junior career in the WHL was built on consistency. with 203 career games split between the Prince Albert Raiders and the Seattle Thunderbirds. and 79 points in total. He helped Seattle win the 2022-23 WHL championship. recording 10 points in 19 playoff games. and later earned WHL Second All-Star Team and CHL Memorial Cup All-Star Team honors.

On the international stage, Allan represented Canada at the 2023 World Junior Championship, managing two points in seven games as the team won the gold medal.

With Tuesday’s announcement, the Sharks have effectively turned what could have been a restricted-free-agent decision into something more certain. Allan’s development path—AHL impact, brief NHL exposure, and an organization-first extension—now has a clear timeline through the 2027-28 season.
