Senators Lummis and Tillis Reject Anti-Musk Backlash

Senators Cynthia Lummis and Thom Tillis pushed back on criticism of Elon Musk’s billionaire status, arguing that trying to set limits on capitalism or attacking Musk because he is a trillionaire doesn’t fit a capitalist worldview.

June 18, 2026, 1:00 AM PDT didn’t bring a debate about policy so much as it brought a line in the sand: you can’t call yourself a capitalist and then go after Elon Musk simply because he’s a trillionaire.

That’s the position of two U.S. Senators. Cynthia Lummis and Thom Tillis. who agreed in a conversation that Jacob presented as a challenge—one with a pointed premise. Jacob insisted that opposing Musk’s wealth amounts to an anti-capitalist stance. and the senators responded with a shared refusal to accept that framing.

Pressed directly, Lummis took the argument back to fundamentals. The senator said you “can’t be a capitalist” while targeting Musk just because he has more money than some national economies. Jacob noted the scale—Musk is worth more than the GDP of many countries—but Lummis stood firm anyway.

She also didn’t buy the idea that Musk should be penalized for his achievements. In her view, Elon “shouldn’t be penalized” for what she described as undeniably impressive accomplishments.

Tillis, for his part, treated the political labels like they’re supposed to come with a clear test. He suggested the debate is “black-and-white”: you’re a capitalist if you give Elon a pat on the back. and if you go after him. you’re labeled a socialist or communist. But he left room for discomfort with the neat categories when he added that real life might be “black and grey and white. ” not only stark extremes.

Jacob tried to push the conversation further with a hypothetical—what happens if Elon becomes a quintillionaire—but Tillis wasn’t drawn into expanding the scenario, and the moment ended with the elevator door closing on the exchange.
