When Mayte Gutierrez saw Amin Abdullah on patrol at the Islamic Center of San Diego, she felt the kind of safety that comes from routine—and from knowing the person keeping watch won’t freeze.
“He was like a hawk,” Gutierrez said. “Even if it was a quiet day, he was on alert and ready if anything happened.”
On May 18, Gutierrez’s worst fears came true. Two gunmen opened fire at the center, an attack police are investigating as a hate crime. In the moments that followed. Abdullah confronted the attackers and. according to police. sacrificed his own life to protect worshipers. staff and school children at the mosque.
“He saved lives,” San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl said at a news conference, calling Abdullah’s actions “heroic.”
The police account also describes a grim chain of events outside the building: Abdullah was one of three men killed in the attack. The suspected gunmen—ages 18 and 19—were found dead of self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Authorities had not identified the suspects as of May 19.
A fundraiser for Abdullah’s family—organized by the Islamic center and the Council on American-Islamic Relations—has raised more than $1.9 million in donations, with the effort mourning him as a “San Diego Martyr.”

Martyr? Man people really will do anything but I’m glad the mosque wasn’t overrun.
So he confronted two teens and started a lockdown… that’s insane. Why didn’t the cops get there faster or was it all like immediate chaos.
I saw somewhere it was “self-inflicted” but like… does that mean they offed themselves or police did it? They say hate crime but I need the whole story, not just headlines.
Nearly $2 million raised already… good but also sad how that’s what people do now. If he was like a hawk on patrol then that means they were watching, so I’m just confused how it still happened in the first place. Lockdown protocol helped but dang, why only 140 people? I mean that number seems random.
