Scotland’s early mistake sinks hopes in Morocco loss

Scotland’s early – Scotland couldn’t recover from conceding just 72 seconds into its World Cup group match against Morocco, falling 1-0 at Boston Stadium. The late push—anchored by Angus Gunn’s saves—kept the deficit tight, leaving Scotland still alive with its final group game

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The night started with the kind of moment no team wants to replay: a long ball, a Scottish defense caught short, and an early goal that turned the rest of the match into a chase.

Scotland entered its second 2026 World Cup game at Boston Stadium looking to leave Group C with momentum—and potentially push toward the knockout stage. Instead, Morocco took control almost immediately. Ismael Saibari scored 72 seconds into Friday’s match, and Morocco held on for a 1-0 victory that proved decisive.

“I wish we could start again,” Scotland manager Steve Clarke said after conceding early. “That would have been the first thing.”

The goal came after Saibari, 25, got behind the Scottish defense and received a long pass from Brahim Diaz. Saibari controlled the ball just outside the 6-yard box and fired it into the top left corner of the net. Angus Gunn, Scotland’s goalkeeper, had next to no chance to stop it.

For Scotland, the damage was immediate and the lesson came fast. The “really poor start” was a phrase John McGinn—who scored the opening-match goal for Scotland—used to describe what went wrong.

As the match moved on, Scotland did what the scoreboard wouldn’t allow them to do early: keep fighting. Che Adams said the early deficit didn’t lead to complacency.

“When you go 1-0 down early, it’s easy to get complacent,” Adams said. “But we didn’t, and we kept going towards the end.”

McGinn also pointed to a clearer shift after halftime. Scotland, he said, found its rhythm once the game settled.

“The second half was much more what you want to see from your Scotland team,” McGinn said, adding that Scotland could have broken through “on another night” based on the effort it showed.

It wasn’t only effort that kept the scoreline from getting worse. Gunn, 30, was central to Scotland’s survival, making a couple of massive saves. None loomed larger than his 52nd-minute block on a Bilal El Khannouss header after a Moroccan corner kick.

After the final whistle, Clarke offered blunt, straightforward praise for the keeper.

“Yeah, that’s why he’s in goal,” Clarke said. “That’s his job. Make saves. And he did it well.”

Those saves mattered beyond the final score, because they preserved Scotland’s goal differential. With Gunn’s performance keeping Morocco from adding a second. Scotland entered its final group stage match against Brazil with a zero goal differential. That could matter if Scotland ends up needing every tiebreaker available.

The path is still not simple. Scotland could face the possibility of qualifying for the round of 32 as a third-place team, depending on how the group finishes. McGinn said the team is trying not to think that far ahead, but it’s impossible to ignore what’s at stake.

“We feel as if we’ve got enough quality to go through in a proper way,” McGinn said. “Tonight, we showed we can compete with teams in the top 10 [in the world].”

Clarke insisted the loss wouldn’t alter Scotland’s mindset. He said nothing will change as the team prepares for its matchup with Brazil.

“Absolutely nothing” will change, Clarke said, explaining that the focus is straightforward for the next five days.

“You want to win the game. And if you can’t win the game, you don’t want to lose it,” Clarke said. “That’s the focus we’ll have in the next five days before we send it down to Miami in the heat and humidity and take on another side from the world’s top 10.”

  1. Why do they keep talking about “poor start” like it wasn’t obvious. Morocco scored instantly every time I’ve seen highlights, so… yeah.

  2. Wait so Gunn made a bunch of saves but still lost 1-0? Sounds like Scotland defense did nothing, but also they were “alive” which makes no sense. If they’re alive then why not win? lol

  3. I swear early goals decide everything and then everyone pretends it’s strategy. Also Boston Stadium… isn’t that like baseball vibes, how are they playing soccer there? Clarke saying “start again” is relatable but cmon you can’t just restart the match every time Diaz does a long pass.
