The Sports Edition puzzle always has that same moment—right when the board stops being just 16 words and starts feeling like it’s watching you back.

On June 19, 2026, Connections: Sports Edition hit with Game No. 634 and a difficulty of 3.5 out of 5. If you want to play without hints. the warning comes first: the bottom of this page contains the answers—and hints—for all four categories. The game itself is simple in concept. and brutal in practice: group the words or objects into four sets of four. with exactly one solution and a rule that four mistakes can spoil the run.

Still, the categories are there for readers who just want to see how it all clicks.

Yellow on the board pointed to a word for a portion of a race: LAP, LEG, SEGMENT, STAGE.

Green asked for the kind of “show off” language that turns moments into performances: FLAUNT, GRANDSTAND, HOTDOG, SHOWBOAT.

Blue narrowed the field to U.S. men’s soccer players: BALOGUN, DEST, REAM, SCALLY.

And purple landed on a classic sports phrase slot: _____ Bell—BAR, COOL PAPA, KETTLE, VICTORY.

If you’re here less for the solution and more for the game’s shape. the structure is the same every day. Connections: Sports Edition is The Athletic’s first-ever game: a daily puzzle built for finding connections between 16 words on the board. The goal is to group them into four categories based on commonalities. and the colors guide the journey—ranging from straightforward (yellow) to medium (green) to challenging (blue) and tricky (purple). Each puzzle has exactly one solution. so words that seem like they could belong in multiple categories are designed to slow you down. not reward guesswork.

For the creator behind the day’s board, the maker’s name is Mark Cooper. He creates Connections: Sports Edition and works as a managing editor for college sports at The Athletic, after previously serving as the managing editor for breaking news.

The next puzzle is set to appear at midnight in your time zone. Until then, the hardest part may be the same thing it always is: resisting the urge to skip ahead—because, for puzzle No. 634, the board’s four categories are waiting just below the fold.

  1. I swear Connections is rigged. Like it says 4 mistakes and then I’m out in 2?? Also why’s the soccer category always random names I’ve never heard.

  2. So is the “show off” category like just words that mean loud?? I tried FLAUNT and then everything fell apart, maybe I was doing it backwards. Also I clicked the answers by accident because it says they’re “below the fold” lol

  3. Mark Cooper sounds like he’d be a coach or something. The puzzle said LAP/LEG/SEGMENT/STAGE and I was like that’s not even sports? then it’s race portions?? ok sure. And the bell one—wait, isn’t that just sports awards like Victory Bell? Idk, I’m probably mixing it up.
