In Fribourg, Switzerland, Canada felt the floor tilt under it in the third period—then Mark Scheifele tilted it back.

The Winnipeg Jets star completed a hat trick in overtime to cap a 6-5 victory over Norway on Thursday at the world hockey championship. Scheifele struck his third goal off a slick three-way passing play from Evan Bouchard and Macklin Celebrini. sending Canada through the night with the narrow kind of win that still leaves noise behind it.

“It felt good (to score),” Scheifele said. “I felt a little snake-bitten in the last few games, but we have such a great team. It was such a resilient effort by everyone, and it was awesome to get the winner.

“Today’s win certainly was not how we drew things up, but give credit to Norway because they played a hard game and got pucks to our net.”

Norway had looked in control. Midway through the third period. goals just under two minutes apart from Noah Steen and Tinus Luc Koblar put Norway ahead 5-4. Canada responded with a gamble—pulling goaltender Cam Talbot for an extra attacker with two minutes 15 seconds remaining—and Ryan O’Reilly made it pay. scoring to send the game to overtime.

Scheifele, who had yet to register a point before Thursday’s game, didn’t just find the scoresheet once. He also added an assist for a four-point game. Gabriel Vilardi—Scheifele’s Winnipeg Jets teammate—contributed a goal and an assist for Canada, and Dylan Cozens also scored. Bouchard finished with three assists.

Yet the win came with a defensive bill. Talbot allowed five goals on 19 shots. On the other end, Norway goaltender Tobias Normann made 36 saves to keep the game within reach as it swung back and forth. Steen scored twice for Norway, while Eskild Bakke Olsen and Johannes Johannesen added the others.

From there, the match became a chase. O’Reilly acknowledged the pressure Norway brought and the work still waiting for Canada.

“Nothing surprises you at this tournament,” O’Reilly said. “Give Norway credit because they came out hard and had us in a hole right away, and we were kind of chasing the game from then on.

“I am sure from a fan perspective it was an exciting game, but there are obviously some things we can clean up. We need to defend better, and we cannot be giving up that many goals, but we will continue to get better as a group.”

With the 6-5 result, Canada moved into first place in Group B with 11 points—three regulation wins and one overtime win. The team will next face Slovenia on Friday.

  1. OT wins are the best but how did they blow a 5-4 lead late?? feels like coaching 101 stuff.

  2. Mark Scheifele hat trick in overtime?? So he scored 3 in OT alone? That’s insane. Also why was Talbot pulled with 2 minutes left, seems wild.

  3. I don’t get it, the article says Norway built a 5-4 lead late in the third, then O’Reilly tied it with the extra attacker… but Canada was “felt the floor tilt.” like the ice moved or something lol. But anyway Scheifele been snake-bitten?? sure.

  4. Norway was controlling it and then suddenly Canada scores twice like it was nothing. I swear these international games are always chaos in the third period. Pulling the goalie is either genius or a disaster, and this time it worked I guess. Winnipeg guys doing Winnipeg things I’m sure.
