“Saving Private Ryan” opens on the shell shock of the Normandy landings on Omaha Beach—and then the story keeps going. pulling viewers forward through Nazi-occupied France. This month. the film is streaming for free on Pluto. timed to bring one of the most talked-about World War II movies back into the reach of anyone who’s never seen it.

Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks, also known from “Forrest Gump”) leads his squad on a mission with a simple, brutal order: find Private James Francis Ryan (Matt Damon, from “Good Will Hunting”). Ryan’s three brothers have been killed in combat. All they have to do is bring him home.

Giovanni Ribisi plays Medic Wade. Jeremy Davies plays Corporal Upham. Adam Goldberg plays Private Mellish.

It wasn’t just intensity that made the film land. It was a monster hit by the numbers, especially for such an intense, R-rated WWII drama. The film grossed about $217 million domestically and around $482 million worldwide against a $70 million budget. When adjusted to today’s money. the totals are described as about $430 million domestic and $950 million worldwide. with a budget of about $138 million—an “outrageous success.”.

Critics didn’t treat it like just another war movie. It was widely hailed as one of the greatest war movies ever made. with particular praise for Spielberg’s direction. Hanks’ performance. and the harrowing and visceral Omaha Beach opening sequence. The film earned 11 Oscar nominations and won five. It won Best Director for Spielberg, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Sound, and Best Sound Effects Editing.

For viewers picking it up on Pluto this month, the stakes won’t feel theoretical. The runtime is 169 minutes, and the release date is July 24, 1998. The writing is credited to Robert Rodat, with producers Gary Levinsohn and Ian Bryce.

When a film enters a crowded genre and ends up defining it, that’s usually because audiences keep meeting the same moment—and feeling something they can’t shrug off. For many people, that moment starts on Omaha Beach, and it keeps pulling forward until the mission’s last step.

  1. Wait so it’s free on Pluto like… with commercials? Kinda mad if it’s gonna cut the beach part. Also isn’t this the one where they can’t find him or something?

  2. I saw someone say it was “making history” or whatever but honestly WW2 movies all feel the same. Like it’s just Tom Hanks yelling for 3 hours and then explosions. Still I’ll probably watch it tho.

  3. Tom Hanks + Matt Damon + Vin Diesel is wild casting for a war movie lol. I thought Vin Diesel was in Fast & Furious, not getting shot at Normandy. Also they said it’s R-rated but Pluto usually cleans stuff up? Confusing. Might be worth it just for the “Omaha Beach changed them” thing even if I can’t follow the plot half the time.
