Rüdiger commits to Mourinho as Real Madrid elections end

Antonio Rüdiger signed a one-year contract extension with Real Madrid after presidential elections delayed the announcement, and he described the chance to work with José Mourinho as a “dream come true.” The move comes as Madrid begin reshaping their squad thi

Antonio Rüdiger did not need long to say what this new Real Madrid deal means to him.

The veteran center back has signed a one-year contract extension with the club. and he called the opportunity to work under José Mourinho a “dream come true.” For a player who was previously due to become a free agent. the agreement over his extension was reached earlier this summer—though the club’s announcement didn’t land until now.

The delay came because Real Madrid’s presidential elections took place first. With Florentino Pérez now back in office. Madrid have moved quickly to start their summer business. beginning with a Monday deal that brought left back Marc Cucurella to the club from Chelsea. Rüdiger’s extension has since been publicized as part of that same push.

Rüdiger had already helped feed the anticipation, with the one-year arrangement becoming among the worst-kept secrets in soccer over the past few weeks. At 33, he even offered hints in the run-up to this summer’s World Cup while his contract was still set to expire.

He was clear that the professional pull is only part of it. Righting the wrongs of last season is a priority for him, but just as important is the chance to work with Mourinho. In public appearances leading into the tournament, he spoke openly about his plans for next season.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” Rüdiger reflected. “A coach like Mourinho is a dream come true for me. I want to work with him and I’m ready.”

There is one obvious complication: Madrid’s back line is expected to get another reinforcement. Ibrahima Konaté is set to arrive on a free transfer from Liverpool, increasing competition for minutes. But Rüdiger did not seem especially concerned about that right now.

While all of this has been unfolding, Rüdiger is currently away at the World Cup with Germany. He did not start Germany’s World Cup opener against Curaçao. That decision did not shock observers—he has been behind Jonathan Tah and Nico Schlotterbeck in the pecking order—and he hasn’t started for his country since September 2025.

Asked to respond to the reduced role, Rüdiger framed it around experience rather than resentment. “I have a lot of experience, and that’s important for helping people,” he reflected.

At Real Madrid, that kind of attitude is precisely what Mourinho is likely to value. The Portuguese coach is back at the club and. with a no-nonsense approach. is expected to search for players he can rely on at the Bernabéu. The signs. in Rüdiger’s case. suggest Mourinho could gravitate toward him—not just for his background on the pitch. but for the leadership he carries into a locker room.

Mourinho’s stated focus is also tied to how last season played out off the field. He is not expected to tolerate chaos again, and he will be looking for authoritative figures to help establish his message. Still, there is a specific piece of history Mourinho will have to weigh.

Rüdiger did contribute to last year’s drama. An incident with young left back Álvaro Carreras is reported to have ended in a slap from Rüdiger. That episode will be impossible for a coach to ignore, especially one who intends to tighten standards.

Even so. it’s equally plausible that Mourinho will see more than punishment in the behavior: the sight of a passionate veteran trying to set a standard. even if it came out the wrong way. If Rüdiger can show his commitment to Madrid—and a desire to move the squad forward in a healthy manner without physicality—Mourinho is likely to embrace him quickly. even if it doesn’t automatically translate into constant minutes.

  1. Dream come true with Mourinho… ok but Mourinho also be stressing people out. I feel like Real Madrid always says “reshaping the squad” and then nothing changes.

  2. I’m confused, didn’t Rüdiger already sign something? Like it says he was due to be free agent but then it’s an extension. Also the election delay sounds like politics messing with football, which is kinda weird in Spain but hey

  3. Mourinho is a “dream”?? He’s been in like a million clubs and half of them hate him by the end. And why do they always announce stuff late, like that makes it less real. Cucurella too, man Real Madrid just buying names. Hopefully “righting the wrongs” means they don’t mess up the defense again.
