Ronnie Schell’s voice carried jokes and quick timing long after the laugh track faded. On Friday, June 12, the actor—best known for playing Marine Pvt. Duke Slater on the 1960s sitcom “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.”—died at age 94 at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, his representative confirmed.
Schell’s route to television started with a different kind of stage. He got his start in entertainment as a stand-up comedian while a senior at San Francisco State University. then went on to perform at supper clubs around the country. He later broke into TV with a debut in 1959 on “You Bet Your Life. ” the quiz show hosted by Groucho Marx.
In 1964, Schell landed the role that most audiences would remember: Marine Pvt. Duke Slater. the best friend of the title character on “Gomer Pyle. U.S.M.C.” Three years later. he starred opposite Goldie Hawn in the CBS sitcom “Good Morning World.” His credits spanned decades and genres. including “That Girl. ” “General Hospital. ” and “Yes. Dear. ” along with Disney’s “Phil of the Future.”.
His screen work extended beyond sitcoms. Schell appeared in more than two dozen films. including “The Revenge of the Red Baron” and “Fatal Instinct.” He also stayed active in voice acting. taking on roles that reached newer audiences. including work in the 2022 film “Toomie: The Hungry Tumor. ” as well as “Jetsons: The Movie” and “Battle of the Planets.”.
Through the arc of a career built in punchlines and character roles. Schell’s path remained consistent: entertainment work that connected with people in living rooms. theaters. and cartoons. Even as formats changed—from quiz show appearances to long-running television characters—his name kept showing up in projects that leaned on personality.
Schell is survived by his wife, Janet; sons Gregory and Christian; and granddaughter Chiara.
