Storms moved through southeast Michigan on Thursday night, and for residents in parts of the region, the sky’s message was urgent: the National Weather Service issued a tornado watch.

The watch was issued Thursday night for parts of southeast Michigan, including six counties. It is in effect until 2 a.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service office in Detroit/Pontiac.

The tornado watch includes Bay, Genesee, Livingston, Midland, Saginaw, and Shiawassee counties. Cities within the watch area include Bay City, Brighton, Durand, Flint, Fowlerville, Howell, Midland, Owosso, and Saginaw.

A tornado watch does not mean a tornado has been spotted. It means conditions are favorable for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Forecasters urged residents to stay alert, monitor weather updates, and be ready to move to shelter if warnings are issued.

The alerts by county were stark in what they did and didn’t say. Wayne County had no active weather alerts, as did Oakland County, Macomb County, Washtenaw County, Monroe County, Lenawee County, Lapeer County, St. Clair County, and Sanilac County.

Within the watch area, Livingston County showed “Tornado Watch in effect until 2 a.m.” The same “Tornado Watch in effect until 2 a.m.” notice appeared for Genesee County.

When the weather turns volatile, the difference between “watch” and “no active alerts” is not a technical detail—it’s what people see when they check the forecast, what they decide to do with the rest of the evening, and how quickly they can react if warnings are issued.

  1. So basically they’re saying tornadoes could happen but also they’re not saying anything is actually happening? Cool cool.

  2. I hate when they do this “watch” thing. Like what am I supposed to do, just stare at the sky until 2 a.m.??

  3. Wayne County had no alerts but Flint is in the list like… ok so why am I seeing it everywhere anyway? My cousin said a tornado was already confirmed which seems wrong but idk anymore.

  4. Every time I hear “tornado watch” I assume one is coming right for my house. They always say “conditions are favorable” like that helps, meanwhile the map looks scary as hell. Also Bay and Genesee getting singled out like that means something, right? I’m not sleeping till 2.
