Sen. Rick Scott didn’t mince words when he talked about Kanye West’s next trip to his home state.

Scott called for West’s upcoming concerts in Tampa to be canceled, pointing to what he described as West’s history of antisemitism. West has a pair of shows next week at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, the home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In an interview with Fox’s Maria Bartiromo, Scott said, “Well, Kanye West adores Hitler.” He added that West “sells clothes with swastikas,” is anti-Semitic, and that it was “crazy” for a public venue in Tampa Bay, Florida to book him for a concert.

Scott framed his argument around who he said would be harmed. “The Jews in Tampa are paying for this,” he said. “They pay their taxes, and they’re going to bring somebody in to attack Jews. This is the craziest thing in the world!”

Scott said he began a petition to try to get the shows called off. He said the petition is on the website change.org and claimed it has “thousands of online signatures.”

West’s scheduled performances are arriving amid a long list of controversies. Over the last few years, West has been known for anti-Semitic stunts, according to Scott’s remarks and the broader record he pointed to.

Scott referenced an InfoWars interview with Alex Jones in which West said he saw “good things” about Hitler and claimed he “liked” the former German chancellor. Scott also cited West selling t-shirts with swastikas and having a diamond swastika chain made.

West has also sought to address some of his past behavior publicly. Scott pointed to West taking out a full-page ad in The Wall Street Journal apologizing for his past behavior. Still, Scott said it didn’t stop the United Kingdom from banning West outright from entering the country.

The political pressure around the Tampa shows is now being pushed through Scott’s petition and his direct appeal that the concerts be canceled—just days before West is set to perform at Raymond James Stadium.

  1. I saw something about Kanye and Hitler and I’m like… yeah cancel it. Also Rick Scott always has petitions, but thousands sounds believable. Tampa Bay really said “let’s do this”??

  2. Petition on Change.org doesn’t do anything though, like people sign stuff then nothing happens. Also didn’t Kanye apologize already with that ad? Feels like they just waiting to cancel him last minute. Not saying it’s ok, just confused why Tampa can’t just ignore him.

  3. “The Jews in Tampa are paying for this”?? That sounds like blaming regular folks for a concert ticket. But also, if he’s really saying he liked Hitler and selling swastika stuff, then yeah that’s disgusting. Idk why the stadium would want that publicity. Between this and the UK thing (was that cancelled already?), I’m just surprised it even made it to next week.
