Trevor Story walked into the next phase of his season with one clear decision: surgery.
The Boston Red Sox announced Thursday that the starting shortstop underwent successful hernia surgery before Friday’s home series opener against the Minnesota Twins. The team placed Story on the 10-day injured list last weekend after he weighed treatment options and ultimately chose to go under the knife.
When Story first told reporters about the situation last week, he said his recovery could take between 6 and 10 weeks if he followed through with surgery. The Red Sox did not provide a recovery timetable when announcing the procedure.
For Story, the hernia added another interruption to a Boston tenure that has repeatedly been slowed by injuries and major procedures. This surgery is his third trip to the surgeon’s room as a Red Sox player.
He had left shoulder surgery in 2024 after dislocating it while diving for a ground ball. which kept him out for the majority of the year. In 2023, he underwent internal brace surgery on his right elbow and remained sidelined until August. In 2022, he dealt with a broken right wrist, but did not receive surgery.
Even when he has been healthy enough to play, consistency at the plate has been a challenge. Through 165 at-bats in 2026, Story is slashing .206/.244/.303 with a .547 OPS—numbers that are among the lowest in all of MLB. He has collected 19 RBI and three home runs while scoring 16 times. He has drawn just eight walks and struck out 57 times, a 32.4 strikeout rate that sits in the bottom-10 in MLB.
Story said his hernia, which arose in spring training, started affecting his performance in the field this season. “A couple of weeks in, just felt it,” he told reporters last weekend (via MassLive). “Tried to grind through it and just got to the point where I might need to take a timeout and evaluate some things a little further. Obviously. I haven’t been able to really move like myself out there. so it kind of built up on me.”.
He added, “After a few hard days in a row, it popped up and I just couldn’t kick it after that. It’s been a battle for the first month, a month and a half. I hang my hat on being able to play and being available, and obviously, now it’s probably a good time to re-evaluate that.”
With Story sidelined, Isaiah Kiner-Falefa and Andruw Monasterio have primarily filled in at shortstop. Nick Sogard will field the position Friday.
There is also a longer look at how Boston will organize its infield while Story recovers. Marcelo Mayer—a natural shortstop who has played second base all season after competing with Caleb Durbin for third base in spring training—will likely start at shortstop for the first time in the majors Sunday. according to interim manager Chad Tracy (via The Boston Globe’s Tim Healey). Tracy said last week the team had begun discussing moving Mayer to shortstop in the wake of Story’s injury.

Hernia surgery sounds brutal. Hope he bounces back.
6-10 weeks? So like 3 months of him sitting which is just great for the Red Sox. Also they didn’t even say when he’s back which feels sketchy? Injuries everywhere.
Wait I thought a sports hernia was like… in the stomach area? So he’s basically out because he can’t eat normal lol. But seriously, third surgery?? That’s wild. Maybe they should’ve rested him instead of surgery immediately.
Not trying to be mean but his numbers are already bad (.206?) so maybe this is the universe telling him to stop rushing back. Red Sox always got someone hurt and then they act surprised. I’m guessing Twins series opener he’s still “injured” even if they call it successful surgery. Feel bad though.
