When Kayron Costa went missing while swimming at Houghton’s Pond in Milton on Saturday night, the response was immediate and wide-ranging.
State Police troopers were called to the pond just after 7 p.m. and the search unfolded with the Underwater Recovery Team and Marine Unit working alongside personnel from local fire departments. according to the Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey’s office. Costa was found Saturday night and taken to a hospital in the Boston area. Morrissey’s office said in a statement Sunday evening that he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Back in Quincy. school officials used social media to try to capture what they knew of a student whose life ended suddenly. Quincy High School Principal Keith Ford wrote that Costa was an “awesome” student who “gained the respect of his classmates and teachers by being a man of great character.” Ford also said Costa was a recipient of the school’s Recognition of Effort Award.
Ford recalled having lunch with Costa. writing that Costa “expressed how much Quincy High meant to him and his family. ” according to Ford. In the same post. Ford said. “My prayers go out to his family during this difficult time. ” and wrote: “Kayron thank you for allowing us to get to know you during your time at QHS. To everyone who knew Kayron, May his legacy live on. We ask for peace that passes all understanding. As a school community let us come together in unity to honor the life of Kayron Garcia Costa. May he rest in peace!”.
Quincy School Committee member Kathy Hubley also addressed Costa’s death in a separate social media post. She said grief counselors and interpreters will be available to students at Quincy High School and Southwest Middle School on Monday. Hubley wrote that she was “very saddened by the news that this tragedy took the life of one of our recently graduated students. Kayron Garcia Costa. ” and added: “My heart goes out to his family. friends and teachers in this time of grief. My thoughts and prayers go out to them all as well as his entire graduating class.”.
For a family, a graduating class, and a school community now facing the same difficult question—how to process the speed of what happened—the work of the search is already giving way to the work of mourning.

So they were swimming and then he just disappeared? That’s so scary.
My prayers. But how deep was that pond?? Like people keep saying pond like it’s nothing and then this happens. Also why was it in Milton if he lived in Quincy?
I saw somewhere it was “Bo When”?? like is that a typo and they found him at a bar or something? Cuz that sentence is weird. Either way RIP, but they need to explain the actual timeline.
This is heartbreaking. I don’t even understand how a search turns into “pronounced dead” the same night, like was he in the water long? Also people keep posting about character and awards but I’m just stuck on the pond part… did somebody open the wrong gate or something? Smh.
