PSG victory parade turns violent in Paris; 1 dead

Paris on Sunday afternoon looked like a victory postcard—supporters gathered near the Eiffel Tower, waving flares and setting off fireworks after Paris Saint-Germain’s second consecutive Champions League triumph. The mood didn’t last through the night.

By the next day, France’s interior ministry said more than 200 people were injured and one person died in the city in the aftermath of PSG’s win.

The celebrations came a day after PSG beat Arsenal in a nail-biting Budapest penalty shootout to secure back-to-back UEFA Champions League titles. In Paris, fans took to the Champ de Mars open space to hail the players staging a victory parade.

But as happened after last year’s title run, the public festivities were repeatedly overshadowed by street violence. Authorities said 57 police were injured in Paris and that more than 400 people were taken into custody—some outside the capital as well.

Police reported that some storefronts in Paris were destroyed. Rioters also torched cars and stands for rental bikes. In provincial towns, vandalism extended to public buildings, with Interior Minister Laurent Nunez pointing to Orleans as an example.

The clashes were not a constant nationwide pattern, authorities said. Police said officers were not specifically targeted in most places, though one police station in central Paris saw brief clashes on Saturday evening.

The death came amid the turmoil, according to the Paris public prosecutor’s office: one young man died following a motorcycle accident during the unrest.

Nunez, a former Paris police chief, oversaw what he described as a major security operation involving more than 20,000 officers. He said the violence had been systematically addressed and that, “The situation was, overall, under control.”

As the numbers landed—200 injured, one death, hundreds detained—the political fight over the meaning of the night quickly surfaced. Far-right National Rally politicians seized on the scene to press for tougher law-and-order policies ahead of next year’s presidential election.

Marine Le Pen, the movement’s leader, said: “Only in France does a victory of a football club trigger riots.”

Others argued the problem runs deeper than football culture. Raphael Glucksmann, mulling a presidential bid on a centre-left ticket, pointed to wider social pressures, saying: “France is living under strain. Society is becoming increasingly brutal. We are a pressure cooker ready to explode anytime.”

The stakes are not theoretical. Last year’s similarly chaotic celebrations after PSG’s first Champions League title led to two deaths, a reminder that the mix of crowds, alcohol, and anger can turn public joy into public harm—fast.

  1. I don’t get it, they’re celebrating football?? People always wanna burn stuff and then act surprised. Also 1 dead from a motorcycle accident during it… that’s just tragic.

  2. Wait so did the PSG players cause the violence or was it just random hooligans? It says 57 cops injured and like 400 taken in custody, which sounds like more than just ‘a little.’ And the motorcycle accident part… was that the police chasing somebody or what, because the wording is weird.

  3. Every time I hear about Paris it’s fireworks and then police and then vandalism, like the city just can’t do joy. They said storefronts destroyed, rental bikes torched, and even provincial towns like Orleans like ok so it wasn’t just one spot. And 20,000 officers sounds like overkill but also not enough?? Idk. PSG win or not people need to chill.
