ST. GABRIEL, La. — The Monday, June 15 shift hadn’t even started when a body scan flagged what authorities say a correctional officer tried to bring in.

Elayn Hunt Correctional Center cadet correctional officer 30-year-old Jaunya Spiller was arrested after a cellphone and drug-laced paper were allegedly discovered on him during the scan. which was conducted upon arrival to his shift. The paper tested positive for cocaine, according to the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections.

The search didn’t stop there. Authorities say a loaded firearm was found in the glove compartment of Spiller’s vehicle.

Spiller’s name is now tied to a rapidly growing string of contraband cases at the prison. The Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections says that so far this year, four EHCC employees have been arrested for introducing contraband into the facility.

Spiller’s case also comes just days after two women visiting the prison over the weekend were arrested for allegedly bringing in marijuana with the intent to distribute.

Gary Westcott. the department secretary. framed the arrest as part of the department’s day-to-day efforts to stop illegal items from entering correctional facilities. “This arrest is a prime example of the proactive measures we are making every day across our correctional facilities to prevent contraband from entering our institutions. ” Westcott said. “The message is clear: criminal activity will not be tolerated.”.

Spiller was originally hired at the prison in March 2026 and has since been fired.

What has happened across EHCC in less than a couple of days has left officials pushing for vigilance. even as the cases pile up: an officer arrested at the gate. visitors arrested after allegedly trying to bring in marijuana. and a department count that now includes four employee arrests this year. For a facility built on control and enforcement, the pattern is immediate—and the consequences are already landing.

  1. Body scan flagged it… so how many times did they miss stuff before? prison guards should know better.

  2. They say it was cocaine-laced paper, like… what even is that, a note? Also a cellphone before his shift is wild. Firing already like that’s enough.

  3. Wait so the “cadet correctional officer” is 30?? That sounds like the department hires them super young and then acts shocked. Also I saw somewhere it was weed in the glove box? not sure but yeah something fishy.

  4. So four employees arrested this year at that one place… that’s not just one bad apple, that’s a whole rotten system. And they found a firearm in his car but he wasn’t even on shift yet? I don’t buy the “proactive measures” line when the contraband keep piling up. Makes me wonder if the scanners even work half the time or if people just keep trying anyway.
