Reds-Diamondbacks rain delay pauses ninth-inning showdown

Reds-Diamondbacks rain – A rain delay halted the Reds-Diamondbacks series finale at Great American Ball Park with Arizona leading 4-3 in the top of the ninth. The tarp covered the infield around 4 p.m., and officials have not provided a restart timeline.

The rain came fast enough to stop a rally—and then it kept coming.

The Cincinnati Reds-Diamondbacks series finale at Great American Ball Park went into a rain delay around 4 p.m. with Arizona leading Cincinnati 4-3 in the top of the ninth inning. The tarp was still covering the infield as of 4:45 p.m. and there had been no timeline announced for when play would restart.

Earlier, stadium officials posted an announcement on the ballpark scoreboards advising of approaching weather around 3:40 p.m. That warning didn’t fully predict what fans would watch as the sky opened just as the Reds were pushing for a late equalizer. In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Reds put two men aboard looking for a game-tying run. Noelvi Marte then struck out to end the inning right before the rain arrived.

Once the delay began, the response was immediate: the Great American Ball Park grounds crew raced out of the home dugout and spread the tarp over the infield.

By 4:50 p.m., an update suggested the game was expected to resume at 5:10 p.m. But at 4:45 p.m., the stadium still had no restart window to offer, and the tarp remained in place.

Out in the stands, the weather didn’t just delay baseball—it redirected attention. Some fans seated under cover and on the concourse were watching a feed of the Netherlands-Japan FIFA World Cup match being played in Dallas.

The immediate question now for both teams is simple: whether the Reds will get the chance to tie the score after Arizona’s advantage carried into the ninth, and whether the expected 5:10 p.m. restart holds as the rain lingers.
