Pride start strong in Jamaica as Scorpions stall

Barbados Pride closed the opening day on 346-5 against Jamaica Scorpions, while Guyana and Windward Islands shared early momentum in the third round.
Barbados Pride made a statement on day one of their West Indies Championship third-round clash with Jamaica Scorpions, ending the day firmly on top.
At Sabina Park, the Pride faced the kind of pressure that comes with a knockout chase. Needing a win just to stay in contention, they started brightly before Odean Smith finally provided the breakthrough for the Scorpions.
Smith prised out captain Kraigg Brathwaite for 74, a score built from 164 balls and powered by seven fours. Jonathan Drakes followed with 94 and was then stumped off off-spinner Brad Barnes, leaving Barbados in a still-competitive position at 207 for three.
Then the game bent decisively toward the visitors. The Pride slipped to 254 for five, but the home side couldn’t turn that wobble into a collapse. Roston Chase and Leniko Boucher steadied the innings with an unbroken partnership worth 92, and they carried their momentum into the closing overs.
Chase finished the day on 82 not out, striking at a run-a-ball pace with 12 fours and one six, while Boucher remained 40 not out from 46 balls.. With Barbados reaching 346 for five by the end of the day, Jamaica will now be looking for early breakthroughs if they want to claw their way back when batting again.
A day shaped by momentum at Sabina Park
From a competition perspective, that matters.. When teams are chasing knockout qualification, the margins are often created not just by who scores runs, but by who controls the rhythm after wickets fall.. Barbados appeared able to absorb the setbacks and keep the innings moving, which is usually the first sign of a side building toward a big total rather than merely surviving.
Guyana and Windward Islands: contrasting targets, shared first-day story
The pair combined for seven wickets, restricting Guyana to 242 all out in 79.5 overs.. With the Harpy Eagles facing a demanding day, they still had their batters to lean on—Tagenarine Chanderpaul made 69, Keemo Paul 64, and Kemol Savory 35—as the innings moved through phases rather than collapsing in one stretch.
Windward Islands, however, were not far from getting the upper hand.. The Volcanoes finished the day on 22 for one in eight overs, but the standout detail was the key wicket that kept the tension alive: Ackeem Auguste was dismissed late in the day to ensure Guyana would not be staring at a comfortable deficit early.
What day one suggests for the next innings
For Jamaica, the immediate question is how to turn tomorrow into something sharper than a chase of a large total.. With the Pride sitting at 346 for five, the Scorpions will need wickets early and sustained pressure through the middle overs.. If they can do that, the game could swing; if not, Barbados will have the kind of scoreboard advantage that keeps qualification dreams very much in reach.
Misryoum will be tracking how both clashes develop as the tournament moves further into its key phases.
