Theft suspect killed as Nob Hill chase turns violent

A theft suspect was killed and two San Francisco police officers were injured Friday morning after a car struck them during a foot chase in the city’s Nob Hill neighborhood, police said.
By 7:36 a.m. Friday. the situation started like many calls police train for: officers were sent to a Trader Joe’s store at California and Hyde streets after a report of theft. What happened next unfolded fast—so fast that a foot pursuit ended with a vehicle hitting the suspect and the two officers who were trying to detain him.
San Francisco police said the officers responded to the store and attempted to detain the suspect. The suspect fled on foot into the street. The two officers then followed him into the street, and all three were struck by the vehicle, according to San Francisco police.
One officer was pinned under the vehicle until emergency crews were able to remove him. All three were taken to a hospital, but police said the theft suspect—whose name has not yet been released—succumbed to injuries.
The two officers were injured, but police said they are expected to survive.
The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, police said.
Louis Wong. president of the San Francisco Police Officers Association union. said in a statement that the officers suffered leg injuries in the collision. “The SFPOA is grateful for the bravery, quick thinking, and selfless actions displayed by these officers under extremely dangerous circumstances. Please keep them and their families in your thoughts as they heal,” Wong said.
Outside Trader Joe’s in Nob Hill, the aftermath was immediate and physical: a brief chase that ended in a collision, a suspect who did not make it, and two officers fighting to recover from injuries they sustained while doing their job.

Another Nob Hill mess. Why do people run from the cops.
Wait so the suspect died because the car hit the officers too? That sounds like a total accident but also like everyone just made bad choices fast. I hope the officers are okay though.
Trader Joe’s really out here catching bodies? Not even shocked, SF is wild. If the driver stayed and cooperated then it’s not like they were trying to kill them or anything… right? Sounds like the chase was the real problem.
I don’t get why they were chasing on foot right into traffic like that. Also “name not released” always bugs me like they’re protecting somebody. Glad the officers might survive but pinned under a vehicle is terrifying. This is why I hate these stop-and-detain things, could go wrong in like 2 seconds.
