Pope Leo Warns AI Could Threaten Humanity Monday

Pope Leo XIV released his first major Vatican document on artificial intelligence on Monday, comparing today’s AI to the biblical Tower of Babel and warning that unrestrained development—especially in warfare—could endanger humanity. He called for stronger law
Pope Leo XIV’s message landed with a jolt on Monday: artificial intelligence, he warned, could become dangerous if nobody keeps it in check.
In his first major A.I.-focused Vatican document. the Pontiff compared today’s Artificial Intelligence to the Biblical “Tower of Babel. ” warning that powerful companies building the technology could end up harming humanity instead of helping it. The comparison wasn’t just rhetorical. It pointed straight at the direction of the A.I. boom—accelerating development without the guardrails he believes are necessary.
Leo also singled out the use of A.I. in warfare, urging the technology face “the most rigorous ethical restraints” when deployed for military purposes.
His concern extended beyond battlefield uses. He warned that A.I. could slowly strip away human dignity if society becomes too obsessed with efficiency, speed and profit.
To stop that slide, the Pope pushed for stronger laws, outside oversight, and more accountability from the companies developing A.I. systems. In his view, the technology shouldn’t stay in the hands of just a few powerful players.
The Pontiff appeared to aim directly at Silicon Valley and tech executives racing to dominate the A.I. boom without fully understanding the long term consequences. He has repeatedly described A.I. as one of the biggest threats facing humanity. and Monday’s document made clear he wants governments and tech companies to slow things down before the situation spirals.
As the Vatican’s latest warning echoes through boardrooms and policy rooms alike, the tension he’s drawing between “the bots” and the Bishop of Rome seems only to be starting.
