Police vacancy grows after Love Island USA pick

Bethlehem police – Bethlehem officials say a newly cast “Love Island USA” contestant left a police job, deepening staffing shortages they describe as difficult to fill and potentially pushing overtime. Sean Reifel, 29, joined the department last August and left May 20, while the
For the Bethlehem Police Department, the timing stings: one of their own is walking from the precinct doors straight into the spotlight as “Love Island USA” begins airing.
Sean Reifel, 29, was selected for the starting cast of Peacock’s dating reality series “Love Island USA,” which premieres Tuesday, June 2. In an introduction package shared on social media, Reifel said his occupation was a police officer.
“I love my job. It’s super cool. You feel like you made a difference,” Reifel said in that video.
Pennsylvania news outlets WHTM and The Morning Call reported that Reifel worked for the Police Department in Bethlehem. a city about six miles from Allentown. He joined last August and his last day on the force was May 20. Since then, city leaders and the department have spoken publicly about what they described as a new staffing gap.
“We now have another vacancy in our department,” officials said, according to The Morning Call.
The department has been under strain from vacancies that, as reported, number 15 positions that can take months to fill. Police Chief Kott warned that the open roles can contribute to officer overtime and burnout. Kott also said he is disappointed by Reifel’s decision.
“I love Sean, he’s a good guy, he was a great officer, but I’m disappointed,” Kott told The Morning Call. “Just because we work so incredibly hard to try to recruit the best people we can to be part of the Bethlehem Police Department.”
Kott left the door open for Reifel to return later, saying Reifel could reapply after his “Love Island USA” experience, the report said.
Mayor J. Williams Reynolds echoed the department’s disappointment. In an interview with WHTM, Reynolds said the city invested heavily in Reifel’s path to become an officer.
“Our police department spent a lot of time training and we paid thousands of taxpayer dollars to send him to the police academy,” Reynolds said. Reynolds also described the personal moment of swearing Reifel into the force.
“We are disappointed he left as we now have another vacancy in our department that is impossible to fill until next year,” Reynolds added. “I never thought I’d see the day in America where reality show participation wins out over being a police officer.”
After Reifel’s departure, the Bethlehem Police Department said in a statement that he “had a bright future in law enforcement” and would be missed. The agency said it is currently accepting police officer applications, with a deadline of June 12.
The show’s schedule continues on its set timetable regardless of how officials feel about the casting decision. “Love Island USA” Season 8 premieres Tuesday, June 2, at 6 p.m. PT/9 p.m. ET on Peacock, with new episodes every day the first week. After that, episodes drop Thursday through Tuesday.
The sequence of facts is hard to miss: a police officer who said he loved the job is gone as the department grapples with 15 vacancies. and the city leaders who trained him say the fallout is another spot they can’t close quickly. As the series moves forward. the department’s hiring push still has a concrete deadline—June 12—and a gap that officials say won’t be filled until next year.

So he just quit for dating TV? That feels wild.
Love Island really recruiting police now?? lol. If they’re already short officers then of course overtime goes up, that part isn’t surprising. Hopefully they can backfill before someone gets hurt.
Wait I thought he left because the city was being unfair or something? Like, if the department is only hiring 15 people over time or whatever, then this is kinda like… the system failing not him? Idk I only saw the headline.
Police chief is disappointed but also wants recruits, right? Seems like the issue is they can’t keep people, not just this one guy. Also “Love Island USA” premieres June 2 like that’s somehow connected to manpower… but I guess timing is a thing. Would be nice if they just paid better or treated officers better, but nah we’ll all blame the reality show.
