Gonzalez skips OTAs to force long-term deal

New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez is skipping the team’s organized team activities as he seeks a contract extension, with the fifth-year option exercised and key figures emphasizing it’s a day-by-day negotiation process.

Christian Gonzalez didn’t show up for the Patriots’ organized team activities, and it wasn’t a sudden mystery inside the locker room. The starting point is contract timing, not health. Gonzalez is staying away while he seeks a long-term deal.

Teammate Marcus Jones explained Gonzalez’s stance during Drake Maye’s MayeDay Softball Classic. Gonzalez participated in the event but, as Jones put it, apparently didn’t speak to the media. Jones framed it as something that changes with each step of negotiations.

“It’s a day-by-day thing. I’ve been in the situation of learning about how contract negotiations stuff goes about,” Jones said, via Karen Guregian of masslive.com. “At the end of the day, they want what’s best for them, and he wants what’s best for him as well.”

This isn’t just about one offseason workout schedule. The Patriots exercised the fifth-year option on Gonzalez’s contract, which would pay him $18.1 million for the 2027 season. For this season, he is scheduled to make $2.259 million in base salary.

The market at his position also adds pressure to the timeline. Rams cornerback Trent McDuffie is listed as at the top of the market with an annual average of $31 million. Gonzalez and Seattle cornerback Devon Witherspoon—also seeking an extension—share the same agent. putting their negotiations in the same orbit even if the teams involved are far apart.

Gonzalez’s recent production gives the situation a sharper edge. The 17th overall pick in 2023 made second-team All-Pro in 2024 and reached the Pro Bowl in 2025. In three seasons, he has totaled 145 tackles, two interceptions, 24 pass breakups and a sack.

When asked about the impact on the group, Jones made it clear that support doesn’t turn into interference. “He means a lot. When it comes down to it, we support him and also the organization,” Jones said. “At the end of the day, that’s their thing. We’re ready when it comes down to him. I know he’s always one of those guys where no matter where he’s at, he’s always working.”.

So for now. the Patriots get silence on the practice field while Gonzalez pushes on the other side of the calendar—trying to turn a fifth-year option into something longer-term. And inside the building. the message from teammates is just as consistent as his absence: readiness. patience. and a day-by-day understanding of how contract talks move.

  1. So he skipped OTAs… wouldn’t that mess up chemistry? Like why risk it for money when he already got paid.

  2. Patriots really out here playing the “day-by-day negotiation” game like it’s a sitcom lol. If he’s healthy enough to play that softball thing then he’s healthy enough to do OTAs.

  3. I heard from a guy at work this is about some injury report thing but the article says it’s timing, not health. Idk man, players always say one thing and mean another. Also 18.1 mil option sounds like he already got what he wanted.

  4. This is wild cause McDuffie got 31 mil and now Gonzalez wants the same vibes. Meanwhile I’m like… is it even smart to skip OTAs when the quarterback is new? I don’t even know what OTAs are half the time, but it feels like a bad look.
