When visitors step into Chicago’s Field Museum on Friday. May 22. they’ll meet “Excavator Pikachu” and a lineup of Pokémon fossil sculptures—nearly 30 of them—stitched directly to real paleontology. The stakes of the exhibit are simple: it has to earn its place as both a world-famous franchise stop and a serious museum experience.
The Pokémon Fossil Museum. a collaboration between the National Museum of Nature and Science of Japan. four collaborating museums. and The Pokémon Company. makes its North America debut at Field. The exhibit runs through April 11. 2027. and it leans hard into what visitors can touch. see. and compare: Pokémon-themed sculptures placed beside real fossils—or casts from Field’s collection.
Field Museum Head of Exhibitions Jaap Hoogstraten said the pitch for bringing the exhibition to Chicago didn’t land at first. He described Chief Fossil Preparator Akiko Shinya pitching him the idea. and how he initially didn’t take it seriously—until she told him. “I’m not a Pokémon fan myself.” He said that changed the conversation because the exhibit still had “real science and lots of collections side by side to this major. global brand.” Hoogstraten said he visited the exhibit in Japan and felt the point was clear: people were paying as much attention to the science as to the Pokémon content.
The Chicago version is largely similar to the Japan exhibit. but Field’s iteration includes key differences—most visibly the addition of Archeops. The avian Pokémon. known for bearing both bird and reptile traits. is presented beside Field’s archaeopteryx fossil. unveiled in 2024. Hoogstraten said he’s looking forward to showing off a new Pokémon sculpture. which he expects will be a hit among fans. alongside one of the museum’s recent acquisitions.
He also said Field added more introductory material about the Pokémon franchise. As guests enter, they first learn about the history of Pokémon and different Pokémon character and ball types. Hoogstraten said the museum decided on this added section to make the exhibit accessible for a wider array of audiences.
Inside the exhibit, Field draws a bright line between what is real and what is made for the theme. The fossils are labeled in color: red indicates real fossils, while blue indicates Pokémon. Alongside plaques for the real specimens. the exhibit includes plaques for each Pokémon. with correct pronunciation. height. weight. core types and “fun facts. ” including an example that Wartortle is a modern Turtle Pokémon.
Most of the experience is built for close viewing, but it isn’t only about looking. There are interactive elements. including an air scribe that guests can touch while watching a video of it in use through a microscope. Visitors can also handle a collection of excavation tools used in Argentina, Wyoming, Utah and Illinois.
For fans, the exhibit’s roster spans recognizable names across multiple generations and fossil-adjacent characters. Featured Pokémon include Archen. Archeops. Aerodactyl. Tirtouga. Carracosta. Omanyte. Omastar. Relicanth. Kabuto. Kabutops. Anorith. Armaldo. Tyrunt. Tyrantrum. Amaura. Aurorus. Lileep. Cradily. Shieldon. Bastiodon. Cranidos. and Rampardos.
Visitors do not need to be Pokémon superfans to enjoy the exhibit. The museum pairs cartoony-but-informative Pokémon plaques about Pokémon fossils with truly excavated fossils. aiming the exhibit at different ages and different starting points in the same room. Still. the layout is built to reward deeper familiarity: guests with extensive franchise knowledge are likely to spot extra details and connections.
To attend, visitors must buy a ticket add-on for the Pokémon Fossil Museum when purchasing admission to Field Museum. The add-on is available on the Field Museum website for $18 per adult.
