Platner takes pause after assault allegation denial

Graham Platner, the Democratic Senate candidate in Maine, denied a sexual assault allegation published by Politico and said he would pause before deciding his next step. Jenny Racicot described an on-and-off relationship with Platner that ended after she said

Graham Platner didn’t suspend his Senate campaign after a sexual assault allegation surfaced. But in a statement posted to social media on July 6, 2026, he promised a pause—an intake of time before he decides what comes next.

The denial centers on an account from 41-year-old Jenny Racicot. a Maine resident. who told Politico that she had an on-and-off relationship with the veteran and oysterman. She said it ended after an intoxicated Platner, in 2021, forced himself on her despite repeated requests for him to stop. Racicot said she remembers the moment her choice ended: “I remember the specific moment where I thought to myself. like. ‘This is no longer my choice. ’” she shared.

Platner rejected the allegation in language that left little room for ambiguity. Calling the claims “troubling. serious and false. ” he said. “Any accusation of nonconsensual behavior is categorically false.” He added that even if the reporting is inaccurate. the political reality it creates is something he intends to handle carefully. “Regardless of the inaccuracy of the reporting. but mindful of the political reality it will inflict. we are taking time to reflect on the best path forward.”.

For now, the campaign continues. In his statement, Platner said he would not suspend his bid. Still, he said the pause would come before he determines his next move.

Racicot’s account arrived in public after a New York Times report described former romantic partners of Platner recounting “unsettling” behavior from the veteran and oysterman. Racicot said she was drawn to share more details when she saw the Times story devolve into political attacks on another accuser—something she frames as crossing a line. She said she still believes in Platner’s political goals, but can’t support “him as a person.”.

That distinction—between policy aims and personal character—sits at the core of the current fight, as Platner directs his effort toward defeating incumbent Republican Sen. Susan Collins. In his statement, he vowed to use “every tool at our disposal” to win.

For voters in Maine. the immediate tension is not only over the competing narratives themselves. but over what the candidates choose to do in the aftermath. Platner is denying the allegation outright while asking for time to “reflect” on a “best path forward.” Racicot is describing a moment in 2021 that she says stripped her of choice. and she says she cannot separate that account from the person he’s asking the state to trust.

  1. “Political reality” like what does that even mean. Either something happened or it didn’t. Idk why they keep talking in circles.

  2. Wait he said the accusation is false but the campaign isn’t suspended? I don’t get how you can “take time” and still keep running full speed. Politico and NYT just making it up for politics or what?

  3. I don’t get how “categorically false” doesn’t automatically shut it down. Also she said on-and-off relationship but then alcohol, then forced himself? Like people are gonna argue about policy vs person forever and meanwhile Susan Collins just keeps trucking.

  4. Susan Collins is gonna steamroll whoever anyway, this is all noise. Also if she said it was forced in 2021 why is he even still allowed to be on ballots like normal? Seems like both papers are exaggerating but the “intoxicated” part feels like a plot twist.

  5. Politico NYT whatever, seems like the whole thing is turning into a circus. If he paused but still keeps running, that’s basically a PR pause not a real one. And the part about her saying the campaign wasn’t suspended… I mean maybe he couldn’t suspend because lawyers told him? Or maybe that’s giving him too much credit idk.

  6. It says he would pause, but also “campaign continues” so I’m confused. Like is the pause just his PR people taking a breath? And she says she can’t separate goals from character but I guess voters will still vote for the platform? idk I’m just tired of these allegations getting turned into partisan wrestling matches, then everyone acts surprised.
