Philadelphia heat – Philadelphia has declared a Heat Health Emergency from 11 a.m. Thursday through 8 p.m. Friday as the FIFA World Cup Fan Festival begins at Lemon Hill Park, with temperatures expected to reach about 95 degrees and heat indexes topping 100.

The World Cup celebrations were supposed to feel carefree. Instead, Philadelphia is starting day one with a weather warning.

At Lemon Hill Park in South Philadelphia. the FIFA World Cup Fan Fest kicks off today. and the city is already preparing for high temperatures—up to 95 degrees—while a Heat Health Emergency runs through Friday evening. The City Health Department declared the emergency from 11 a.m. Thursday through 8 p.m. Friday, timed to the first two days of the festival when many fans are expected to watch and celebrate outdoors.

The plan is designed around one problem: staying cool without losing the day. Visitors at the festival will have access to cooling area tents equipped with fans and misters. The city will also set up multiple water stations and place picnic tables in shaded areas so guests can step away from direct sun.

For people making their way to the park on foot or by bike from City Hall, Philadelphia is putting shade and cooling along the route as well. Four hospitality hubs will be located on the route, offering shade, water, and misting stations. Those hubs will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day.

Outside the festival perimeter, the heat is expected to press on. Temperatures in Philadelphia are forecast to climb to 95 degrees by Thursday afternoon, with a heat index of 102. The National Weather Service is forecasting thunderstorms likely before 1 a.m. but the rain is not expected to cool conditions heading into Friday. The high on Friday is forecast around 96 degrees, with a heat index as high as 103 degrees.

Taken together, the timing and the numbers leave little ambiguity: the city’s emergency window covers the same outdoor stretch when the festival’s crowd will be building, with heat indexes hovering around the low 100s even after an early-morning chance of thunderstorms.
