Trippier weighs cancelling Wolves deal after Edwards sacking

Trippier considers – Kieran Trippier is considering cancelling his Wolves contract after Rob Edwards was sacked, feeling “betrayed” because Edwards was the reason he joined. Several Wolves players have also contacted Edwards to share their dismay.

Kieran Trippier cut short a holiday in Turkey, flew in for a medical, and signed for Wolves earlier this week. Just days later, the club have sacked Rob Edwards on Thursday—and Trippier is understood to be so angry he is considering cancelling his Wolves contract.

The 35-year-old defender feels “betrayed” by the decision. with Edwards being in charge described as a key factor in his choice to join Wolves last week. Trippier reportedly sees Edwards as the man who sold him on the role he would play. and now that exit has left him reassessing whether he still wants to be part of the project.

Edwards, who was 43, was not just the coach who brought Trippier in. He was also building a dressing room he wanted the new arrivals to share. Trippier’s move was viewed as important precisely because Edwards was eager to add him to his team and bring the same kind of standards to Wolves that Trippier had helped enforce elsewhere.

That sense of shock has echoed around Molineux. Several Wolves players have reached out directly to Edwards to express their dismay at the sacking.

Trippier’s deal has its own timing twist. The defender is essentially understood to have signed a pre-contract. meaning he will join Wolves on July 1. when his contract at Newcastle ends. So while the sacking has come immediately after he put pen to paper. it has also placed uncertainty over what should be the start of his new chapter.

Wolves’ recruitment momentum this week included Mexico forward Raul Jimenez, who signed and scored for his country in their World Cup win over South Africa on Thursday night. Trippier had been brought in on the basis of the influence Edwards was looking to add to his dressing room.

Trippier’s path to Wolves is also tied to where Edwards wanted him. Before agreeing to join, the former England full back had Premier League interest and other options abroad, including in Saudi Arabia. Wolves won the race because the role Edwards foresaw for him seemed to fit what Trippier wanted.

Trippier’s career at Newcastle adds another layer to the emotion behind the decision-making now. His signing from Atletico Madrid in January 2022 is described as a catalyst for Newcastle’s resurgence under Eddie Howe. with the former England defender helping set standards on the pitch. It is that track record Edwards was reportedly hoping to replicate at Wolves.

For now, Trippier is weighing up his options after Edwards’ sudden exit — and for Wolves, the sacking has quickly become more than a managerial change. It has already reached into the heart of a fresh signing who believed he was joining the right man, at the right time.

  1. He signed like the news came out immediately after?? That feels like a bait and switch to me. If the coach was the whole reason he joined, I get being pissed.

  2. Isn’t this the guy who trains everyone like they’re in the Army? Like what did Wolves expect, they fired the dude and now everybody surprised? Also pre-contract stuff confuses me… so does he still go July 1 or nah?

  3. betrayed lol sounds dramatic but I mean if Edwards was the one who sold him on the role then yeah. The part about him cutting his holiday short to fly for a medical is wild though, like he already had the “okay we’re doing this” moment. Wolves sack him days later and suddenly he’s rethinking everything, makes sense I guess. And players messaging the old coach? idk sounds messy behind the scenes.
