Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Mahomes swapped Arrowhead Stadium football for a World Cup date night on Tuesday, watching Lionel Messi score a hat-trick as Argentina opened their campaign with a 3-0 win over Algeria.

Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Mahomes didn’t just sit down at Arrowhead Stadium on Tuesday—they settled in like fans who know exactly what they’re looking for.

The Kansas City Chiefs star and his wife, Brittany, took their seats in the stands to watch Lionel Messi deliver a brutal statement in the World Cup. Argentina beat Algeria 3-0, and Messi scored a hat-trick as the reigning champions began their title defense with authority.

The couple are no strangers to the sport. Brittany, a former soccer player, played at college level, and the pair are co-owners of the Kansas City Current. On this night, though, it was the NWSL replaced by the World Cup. Mahomes watched Messi single-handedly dismantle Algeria, then made his feelings unmistakable afterward, posting three goat emojis on X as he declared Messi the GOAT.

The World Cup scene is another reminder of how Mahomes’ life off the field has shifted while he’s been working back from the worst of last season. He underwent season-ending surgery in December after tearing ligaments in his left knee in the waning minutes of a loss to the LA Chargers. Since then. he has been rehabbing in Kansas City. and he has been on the field throughout the entire Chiefs offseason program.

Mahomes has maintained that his goal was to be ready for Week 1 of the coming NFL season. That patience is now paired with the biggest contract news of his offseason: last week, he signed the first-ever NFL deal worth over half a billion dollars after reworking his contract with the Chiefs.

Under the restructured terms. the deal adds two years and pushes his total compensation past $500 million—moving him into a league-record figure. Mahomes previously signed a 10-year. $450m contract in 2020. which set a benchmark not only for his position but for any football player. The updated extension ties him to Kansas City through the 2033 season, when he will be 38. It is valued at $504.75m, with incentives and escalators that could push the total to $522.25m.

The Chiefs have leaned into those regular offseason contract reworks, giving the team financial flexibility to keep building a roster capable of competing for championships.

Mahomes’ track record helps explain why all of this—injury recovery, contract growth, and the spotlight—keeps intensifying. Since the Chiefs made him their starter for the 2018 season. he has thrown for nearly 36. 000 yards. earned six Pro Bowl nods. and won three Super Bowl titles in five trips to the championship game.

Kansas City has had its own reminder of how quickly momentum can turn. After reaching three straight Super Bowls, the Chiefs finished last season 6-11. Mahomes was on injured reserve for the final three games, all of them losses, and the team shifted its focus toward the coming season.

Still, Tuesday night belonged to Messi, and Mahomes—just another fan in the stands for a rare crossover moment—made it known with one simple post: three goat emojis, and a superstar’s verdict on a superstar.

  1. So he’s just skipping Arrowhead to watch soccer? Honestly good for him I guess. Also the knee thing is wild, like how does he even do that after surgery.

  2. The article says he watched Messi “single-handedly”?? Algeria was probably tired or something. But Mahomes posting the goat emojis like that is kinda funny, like ok we get it. I just feel like people always act like Messi is doing it alone every game.

  3. I can’t even tell if this is NFL news or soccer news lol. Arrowhead stadium to Messi hat trick date night… rich people problems. I saw something about his worst season last year and surgery in December, so maybe he’s secretly warming up for Week 1 by watching other athletes? Also why does it mention their kids by name like that, kinda random.
