JD Vance Says ‘The View’ Hosts Were Only ‘A Little Bit Vicious’

JD Vance didn’t walk away from “The View” thinking he’d been torn apart. He just insisted it wasn’t as bad as he feared.

Hours after appearing on ABC’s daytime talk show on Tuesday, the vice president went on Fox News’ “Gutfeld!” during his Tuesday night stop and described his expectations before the taping. He admitted the visit “defied” what he thought would happen.

“Honestly, Greg, I expected them to be absolutely vicious,” Vance said. “And they were only a little bit vicious. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be.”

In the same segment, Vance claimed that Joy Behar offered him a compliment during a commercial break. He said Behar told him, “You know what, you’re pretty good for a Republican.”

“I was like, ‘Whoa.’ That is a way better compliment than I could’ve expected from Joy Behar,” Vance added.

But Vance’s tone shifted when he addressed the tension of his moment with Whoopi Goldberg. He recalled believing the clash would come from the host to his left, and instead said it came from the host to his right.

“I gotta say, I thought Sunny [Hostin], the woman to my left, was going to call me racist. In reality, it was Whoopi, the woman to my right, that called me racist. Expectations defied,” he said.

The back-and-forth Vance referenced centered on Goldberg questioning him about the treatment of people of color in America. During the taping on Tuesday, Goldberg asked him what people of color have done to the Trump administration “that has allowed it to really stigmatize” them.

Vance responded by questioning whether Goldberg was suggesting the administration was “anti-minority or anti-Black.” Goldberg then accused Vance of spinning her words.

“No I didn’t say that!” Goldberg sounded off. “I asked — see? Don’t start any stuff with me, man. Don’t get me in trouble.”

For Vance, the episode wasn’t only about conflict—it was also about where the criticism landed. Even when he framed the overall experience as less hostile than expected, he still singled out Goldberg’s accusation as the key moment that surprised him.

Not everyone who watched had the same takeaway. Meghan McCain, who was a co-host on “The View” for four seasons from 2017 to 2021, posted on X on Tuesday with a sharper assessment of what she said was happening on the show.

“My biggest takeaway from Vance on ‘The View’ is honestly how s–tty and undisciplined the hosts STILL ARE,” McCain wrote.

After that, she said the hosts “still get basics facts wrong, flub easy questions and can’t get through a segment without yelling at each other.” She added: “Vance handled it all very well.”

  1. Wait so Joy Behar complimented him? That’s wild, because I swear she roasts everybody. Also “racist” accusations are always getting thrown around and nothing gets resolved.

  2. Whoopi called him racist? I thought he was the one being called racist for like… idk, his whole vibe. But then he says it wasn’t as bad, okay. The View always acts like they’re neutral and then it’s just like, nope.

  3. Meghan McCain saying it was s–tty and undisciplined doesn’t surprise me. Also Vance saying “expectations defied” feels like damage control, like he prepped for a fight and then got one question he didn’t like. They keep talking about “people of color” but it always turns into who got offended first. Honestly I don’t even watch The View, I just know cable shows are fake as hell.
