Paraguay keeper bombs handshake as Mbappé hit before brawl

Mbappé ball-throwing – Kylian Mbappé scored the decisive penalty as France beat Paraguay 1-0 in Philadelphia, booking a last-16 meeting with Morocco. But the night ended with a ball thrown at Mbappé, a handshake snub turned sour, and a full-time brawl involving players from both tea
Philadelphia’s night was supposed to be about football. It turned into something else.
France edged Paraguay 1-0 at the World Cup on Saturday to reach the last 16, with Kylian Mbappé firing home the winner from the penalty spot in the 70th minute. Yet the contest was already stained by tempers and tackles, and it only got worse as the final whistle came around.
Paraguay’s approach was physical to the point of recklessness, and the impact was felt most around Mbappé. He was targeted throughout by Andres Cubas, Matias Galarza and Juan Jose Caceres. In the 77th minute, Caceres kicked Mbappé in the shin, sparking the first wave of heat that never fully cooled.
Mbappé was also seen laughing during an earlier confrontation with Galarza. But that moment of levity didn’t match the hostility that followed as the match drew to a close.
When the game ended, tempers spilled over into chaos near the center circle. After the final whistle, players from both sets of teams were involved in a fracas in the immediate aftermath.
And then came the handshake moment that turned into an insult.
Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill went over to Mbappé after the match, trying to shake his hand. Mbappé ignored him, and Gill responded by throwing a ball at his back.
The exchange had already been set in motion earlier in the evening. Mbappé had appeared to taunt Gill after he tucked away the winning penalty roughly 20 minutes before, and the pair then exchanged heated words.
Despite the aggression, Paraguay somehow escaped without a yellow card while lashing out at several France players at the home of the NFL’s Eagles.
Mbappé, for his part, spoke afterward about the way France had handled a difficult match. “I think that today, the match we had, the way we played it, was very good. We showed that we’re not just a team that knows how to play attacking football. If we have to get our hands dirty, we’ll get our hands dirty, excuse the expression. We have no problem with that.”.
Gill offered a different take on the handshake incident, insisting he only tried to congratulate Mbappé. “I gave him my hand to congratulate him but he ignored me. Obviously I entered a heated moment, but that’s all I did. After that, I calmed down. I just wanted to congratulate them. The truth is, they’ve had an excellent campaign as they’re the favorites to be world champions.”.
He also framed Paraguay’s physicality as deliberate intent from the start. “From the very first moment, we set out to make our presence felt on the pitch – to play hard. If the ball gets through, the man doesn’t. And, honestly, I think the team handled itself well.”
France’s camp painted a harsher picture of what it endured. Didier Deschamps said: “They pull out every trick in the book. It’s not the kind of football that draws people to the stadium. Each team played the way they want. But there were insults from the other bench that I could do without.”
William Saliba summed up the mood in simpler terms: “We fought a battle. We won the battle.”
By the time the dust settled, France’s qualification was secure. The prize now is straightforward: France will take on Morocco in a mouthwatering last-16 tie on Thursday.

Why is everyone acting like throwing a ball is normal? smh
Handshakes are not that serious but somehow it turned into a fight?? Like who throws a ball at someone after a penalty, that’s just petty.
Wait so the keeper threw the ball because Mbappe ignored the handshake? I saw a clip where Mbappe was already mad earlier so I’m guessing the whole thing started with him being disrespectful. Also shin kick in the 77th minute sounds wild, but I swear soccer fights always look worse than they are.
This is why I don’t even watch World Cup anymore. First it’s “football” and then it’s like UFC on the field. Mbappé laughing then getting targeted just feels like the ref ignored it until it exploded. And that handshake part… like maybe Paraguay goalie was trying to be friendly but Mbappé was already on some drama mode. Philadelphia crowd probably egged it on too.
