False ceiling collapse prompts Palma apartment evacuation

An apartment building on C. Manuel Sanchís Guarner in Palma was evacuated on Saturday after part of a false ceiling in a room on the second floor collapsed. The incident happened around noon. There were initial fears that people were trapped, but police and the Palma Fire Brigade established that this wasn’t the case and that no one had been injured. The building was evacuated as a precautionary measure. The top floor of the three-storey building was inspected, and a terrace was found to be
in good condition, ruling this out as the cause of the collapse. Photo: Bombers de Palma (Palma Fire Brigade). It is believed that structural reinforcements had caused bulging because of recent temperatures and that this had brought plaster of the false ceiling down. After checks, residents were allowed to return after around an hour. The upper terrace and the room where the ceiling collapsed remain cordoned off. On Monday, the fire brigade will return with town hall technicians and conduct a more thorough inspection.
