The first official look at Outer Banks’ final season doesn’t ease you in. It starts with John B. (Chase Stokes) staring in horror as Cleo (Carlacia Grant) blows up the van he loves.

The moment sits inside Netflix’s trailer for the upcoming fifth season, which will debut August 20—nearly two years after the October 2024 premiere of Season 4.

This time, the end comes all at once. Netflix is releasing the full 10-episode Season 5 as a binge drop, not in stretched, split batches. The series’ fourth installment had been split into two batches that premiered four weeks apart. and Netflix has been pulling away from that split-season model. Bridgerton is cited as the only current scripted series still using it.

The show frames it as the Pogues going up against the world, seeking to avenge their best friend and bring everything on home… one final time.

The stakes have already been set. In the final seconds of the Season 4 finale, Kiara—JJ’s devastated girlfriend—said “Revenge.” She and the rest of the Pogues (plus Rafe) vowed to go after JJ’s killer, his biological father Chandler Groff, who was headed to Portugal.

The new trailer offers a glimpse of what comes after that promise. The Pogues are shown confronting Chandler and paying tribute to their fallen friend, while the teaser leans into the sweeping action Outer Banks has become known for. The trailer uses the tagline “One Last Ride.”

It’s also a different direction from a teaser shown at the Netflix upfront presentation in May. That earlier teaser featured the Pogues in custody and attending a hearing that appears to take place in Croatia. based on the flag and police uniforms shown. 1. Wait Cleo blows up John B’s van?? Like why would she do that lol. Also JJ’s “tragic loss” in Morocco?? I’m still mad about that, I guess.

  2. I don’t get it, didn’t they already end the show? Like isn’t Season 4 the last one? But sure, Netflix releasing all 10 at once like they do with everything. And Chandler Groff is still out?? Sounds like they’re just dragging it.

  3. The trailer made it seem like JJ dies and then suddenly everyone’s teaming up with Rafe?? I mean I guess grief makes people do weird stuff but come on. Also “no home to return to” like they’re just floating around. Netflix better not pull another cliffhanger thing after all 10 episodes drop.
