Oppo Find X9 Ultra: a camera-style phone with real flair

Oppo’s Find X9 Ultra is still weeks away, but the company didn’t exactly wait to tease the imagination. Today it showed off the design in full, and—having seen the hardware up close—it’s one of those phones that makes you stop scrolling just to stare at the back.

What stands out immediately is the look and feel. Oppo says the Find X9 Ultra will launch in “Tundra Umber” and “Canyon Orange” colors, and the Tundra Umber version goes hard on the “classic camera” vibe. Oppo even leans into the idea with design choices that feel more intentional than trendy. The faux leather isn’t subtle either; in a world of glossy slabs, it’s the kind of texture that grabs your attention fast—almost you can hear the difference when you tap it with your fingernail.

This is also a big smartphone in a very literal way. Not just in screen size, but in physical heft and the sheer bulk of the rear camera module. That module is where Oppo put the emphasis, and it’s not just for show. Oppo previously confirmed a pair of 200MP sensors and some impressive telephoto lenses too, so the back doesn’t look like an afterthought—it looks like the whole phone is built around what’s inside that block.

In other words, the term “camera phone” doesn’t feel like marketing copy here. Oppo’s orange accents—on the camera button and around the camera ring—add a pop that actually matches the old-school camera inspiration. It’s premium, it’s a little dramatic, and it feels like Oppo finally decided to bring a more distinctive design to the global market. Honestly, I’m thrilled to see this sort of hardware showing up where more people can get it.

Still, “global” is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Oppo’s earlier “global” rollouts, like the Find N5 and Find N6, have shown that a worldwide launch doesn’t always mean the device is available in large parts of the world. So even if this sounds promising—there’s some indication Europe could be included—there’s a big caveat hanging over expectations. A launch in the United States isn’t remotely on the table.

For now, it’s mostly the hardware that Oppo wants you to focus on. And that’s kind of both satisfying and frustrating—satisfying because the design is genuinely striking, frustrating because you still don’t know everything about how it performs day-to-day. All I can say for now is that the physical choices are clearly aiming for a specific mood, and the April 22 launch date is close enough to start counting down.

Misryoum editorial desk noted that the Find X9 Ultra launches on April 22. The rest… we’ll see soon. Stay tuned—because there’s more coming, or at least that’s what Oppo seems to be hinting. And I’m not sure I want to look away until they show what else it can do.
