One dead, two missing after Philadelphia garage collapse

The scene over at the construction site in Philadelphia is honestly hard to look at. A parking garage that was still being built just gave way on Wednesday, leaving one person dead and two others still missing. You could smell the wet concrete and dust hanging in the air for blocks around, a heavy, gray reminder of what happened.
Mayor Cherelle Parker stood before reporters and didn’t mince words about the recovery effort. She confirmed that a roof segment fell first, triggering what she described as a “progressive collapse of connected sections across all seven levels.” It’s a terrifying thought, really—everything just cascading down like that. She promised that the city isn’t giving up on the missing workers, saying they won’t rest until everyone is accounted for.
Fire Commissioner Jeffrey Thompson explained that things are incredibly unstable right now. His crews managed to pull three people out of the rubble, but one of them was critically injured and unfortunately passed away later at the hospital. Two others were treated and released, which is some small relief, I guess. Because the structure is so shaky, the fire department has to go in and basically take the whole thing apart piece by piece, layer by layer, just to get down to the bottom safely.
It’s a slow, agonizing process.
The garage is owned by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Mayor Parker made a point to mention that all the necessary permits were in order and the inspections were up to date before the collapse, which makes the whole situation even more confusing and frustrating for everyone involved. The city is launching a formal investigation into why this happened, while the hospital claims they are working closely with partners to prioritize the safety of the crew. Meanwhile, Governor Josh Shapiro says his office is doing whatever they can to support the rescue teams on the ground.
We’ll have to wait and see what the investigation finds, but right now the focus is entirely on those lower levels. Misryoum will keep following this as more news comes in.
